Mothercare.

Mothercare is a shiny new store on Duplication Road (near Dickman’s Road) that has high quality baby and mother clothes and things. It is also really expensive for most items, though there are a few deals (like toys) and who’s going to say no to a pregnant woman anyways.

Mothercare is a global (British) brand brought to Sri Lanka by Softlogic. As such the layout, stock etc are all of the highest quality. There’s even an elevator though the shop is only two floors. No expense has been spared, and you can see it in the pricetag.

Clothes for pregnant woman can range from Rs. 5,000 to 10,000 on up, the 5,000 being for what looked like a stretchy t-shirt. Prams can push Rs. 140,000 or the price of a motorbike. Even baby bottles cost about Rs. 4,000 for two.

For children’s clothes the prices range from about Rs. 2,000 on up, we noted Rs. 4,400 on one tiny shirt. Booties cost about Rs. 3,000. We should also note that they seem to have gotten stock wholesale from England because they have a lot of winter clothes – like downy padded jackets – which are only really useful to travelers passing through.

Upstairs, however, the toys are competitively priced to Sri Lankan higher-end shops, and they’re really good quality. A farting toy costs about Rs. 500 while you can get a set of markers for Rs. 1000. Still not cheap, but the quality seems top notch, especially the learning toys. There are also items like car seats (Rs. 25,000 on up) that you probably shouldn’t skimp on.

For an occasional gift or essential item we can see Mothercare being good. Also if you’re loaded and earning pounds or dollars. Everything is the best, on an international level. It’s also priced accordingly.
