There’s little in this city as stunning as Colombo, caught at the right moment, in her naked and natural splendor. While the city has its pretty restaurants, cafes and houses, nothing really comes close to matching the quiet beauty of clear Poya sky or a burning red sun setting over the Galle Face Green.
Sunsets. We love them. And in a city where you’re rarely more than a stone’s throw away from the ocean, your own private NatGeo moment is never out of arm’s reach. Whether you head over to the popular Galle Face Green or scramble to the rooftop of a friend’s apartment (apartments have excellent sunset viewing spots) provided it’s a clear sunny day, you’re likely to catch a stunning display of the city at her best.
We’ve included some images here from a sunset we caught a couple of days ago at Marine Drive. If you cross over the rail tracks lining the road, ignoring the many restaurants and cafes scattered by, you’ll reach a broad expanse of perilous looking rocks. Exercising utmost care, find a nice flat one to perch on, and prepare for a great show. If the day is right and if you’re lucky, you’ll be treated to a full screen, high definition view of one of Colombo’s most beautiful features. This is the free, easy way to be close to nature and really enjoy the charm of the island while still in the city.
If you haven’t spent a few quiet moments watching the slowly setting sun sink behind the sea, try it. That’s nothing quite so lovely. And it’s more relaxing – not to mention cheaper – than a trip to the spa.
