YAMU Newsletter: Apologies, Apps & Fish.

I’m sorry, this is a rather delayed newsletter. Avurudu happened – we went on holiday – and, more excitingly, we got busy making an app. Yes, the YAMU app is finally here. It’s currently in beta for Android and we’ll be launching it on the Google Play Store this Wednesday.

In other news, we visited the Good Market and we saw that it was indeed good. Home to delicious paninis, cakes and iced teas, this is the wholesome foodie’s utopia. We also got an early taste of the Manhattan Fish Market’s much awaited wares.

1. The Good Market: This is wonderful place, home to stalls selling delicious homemade cakes and muffins (The English Cake Company), buttery paninis (Panino), local sauces, jams and general knick knacks – it even led to our discovery of a tongue sizzling chilli sauce aptly christened the ‘firestarter‘. If you haven’t been down to the market yet, we highly recommend a visit. It’s a lovely place filled with friendly, interesting vendors – and there are plenty of activities to keep little children busy.

2. The Manhattan Fish Market: They’ve finally opened their doors – after a long and rather hungry-making Facebook campaign. And the food lives up to the hype – it’s tasty (if a tad expensive), carefully prepared and well matched with sides and sauces. This is well worth a visit – even if you’re not a fan of seafood. Try the spicy baked fish followed by a manhattan mud pie for dessert.

The Android App: This Wednesday (that’s the day after tomorrow) we’ll be launching version 1 of the YAMU app on the Google Play Store.

The app gives you easier access to our content – you can sort through restaurants using an advanced search (eg, what restaurant has a great view, serves alcohol and doesn’t require that I wear shoes?) and we can also give you a list of cool places nearest to you. We also have quick info pages that tell you what you need to know about a restaurant or place at a glance (price range, phone numer, tips, etc). We’ll be adding more features as well go along, so do give it a download 🙂

And iPhone users, the iOS version should be out in a month.

1. Sky Lounge: The Kingsbury’s rooftop bar has a stunning view and a great location. This is currently the most fashionable place to be seen on a Friday night. While the surrounding ocean and city lights give the bar a natural advantage, the service leaves much to be desired. Still worth a visit for the view.

2. Echelon Pub: The Echelon Pub at the Hilton has been around for a while. It isn’t one of city’s the most ‘happening’ evening locations but if you’re looking for more downtempo after work drinks this is a sound option. The service is excellent and they make a mean Guinness and steak pie.

KARAMU (Events)

There’s a fair bit to do in the way of arts and theatre this weekend. His honourable excellent leader Chaminda Pusswedilla will be returning to the stage of the Lionel Wendt from the 6th to 9th June and the past Bridetines choir presents ‘Viva La Diva‘ at the Russian Cultural Centre.

Sanjaya Seniviratne will be exhibiting his paintings at the Paradise Road Galleries, while Colombian photographer Nicolas Van Hemelryck’s exhibition ‘Amazing Amazon‘ opens at Barefoot. Sachini Perera’s photographs of live music performances will also be showcased at the Wendt.

For more happening this weekend, click here.

Have a great week and do download our app if you’re on Android 🙂
