The Om Space.

The Om Space is a yoga studio – they claim to be “”Sri Lanka’s first dedicated yoga and well-being space”” – located off Havelock Road, near the Royal Institute. It’s a comfortable and bright space, decked out in white and turquoise and filled with recycled furniture.

Unfurling into sun salutations without too much self consciousness can be a task, and this being tiny Colombo, the prospect of bending over in your yoga pants can be extra daunting. The classes at the Om Space are chilled out and friendly, and while you may bump into people you know, everyone seems very nice.

They hold about 15 classes per week offering Hatha, Vinyasa, Sivandanda and Kundalini yoga as well as pre-natal and children’s sessions. Each class can accommodate about 20 and a drop in class costs Rs. 900. The teaching style seems generally friendly and informal, ie. not at all intimidating if it’s your first time and the overall vibe is fun and relaxed – although the yoga can get quite hardcore depending on the class you attend (they offer different classes for different levels of experience). I particularly enjoyed an evening Hatha session with Serena which involved some calming chamomile tea post-class.

The Space also offers reiki, reflexology, Indian head massage, and oracle card readings.

Here’s a quick look at the prices:

Drop in class: Rs. 900

4 class pass: Rs. 800 per class, Rs. 3200 total (valid for 6 weeks)

8 class pass: Rs. 750 per class, Rs. 6000 total (valid for 6 weeks)

So overall, the Om Space is a lovely – if teeny bit expensive – option for a satisfying yoga session. The class is friendly and welcoming and Serena is a fun and gentle instructor. If you have the time (and rupee), do check it out. Only thing, no A/C. So take a sweat wiper and water along with you.
