We usually review places, but in this YAMU Loves feature we'll highlight some of our favorite food and drink around the city.
Ahhh, Lamprais. Possibly the greatest introduction to the human palate in culinary history. What spells did the Dutch devise, to achieve such a beautifully crafted masterpiece of a recipe such as this? An ensemble of flavour, sensation and savoury euphoria, the Lamprais is the perfect comestible for anybody and everybody. Regardless of what one's personal tastes might require, this dish offers one of those rare experiences that remain forever imprinted on those lucky enough to try it once.
Now this might offend most of y'all but we at YAMU find ourselves constantly drooling over The Fab's lamprais. Going for Rs. 440 a parcel, this stuff is nowhere near an authentic lamprai, but gosh darn is it good. A rich, flavourful mess, this dish sells out before you can spell it. We realised that there's a short timeframe in between 11:30 – 12:45 that'll allow you to successfully snag a parcel for yourself, so seize this window and GO GO GO!
The parcle itself looks tiny, but is bursting at the seams with:
- Chicken stock infused Samba rice
- Curried chicken
- A rather coconutty shrimp blanchan with a sweet undertone (yes yes, this isn't authentic, but it still makes for a nice little flavour boost)
- Brinjal Pahi
- Ash Plantain curry
- One frikkadel (cutlet)
- A boiled and deep fried egg
- A small helping of Seeni Sambol
That's a LOT of ingredients and it's super filling, too. Its pretty much a dance of different flavours and textures meant to be enjoyed in small spoonfuls so you get an equal distribution of each and every element mentioned above.
Again, this is just an opinion. We're not trying to tell you that this is the best, most authentic, traditional lamprais out there because it is most definitely not. But if you're craving a really good version, go to the Fab at around noon and help yourself to one. They've also got a vegetarian option which comes with soy meat, so if you're a vegetarian you won't miss out!
