Colombo’s got some pretty impressive Father’s Day options this year – possibly a lot more inventive than the Mother’s Day options we found.
There are plenty of deals and packages, and some fun ideas you could try yourself.
Experiences
One idea that really stood out is Emerald’s wish-shirt idea. It takes the boring gift shirt idea and personalizes it for Dads in Colombo. Watch it here. It’s a great idea, so they might sell out soon.
We’ve already covered another fun idea in our excellent events section, the Bavarian Father’s Day the Bavarian Day courtesy Trekurious. It’s Rs. 4000 a head, and you can read all about it here. It’s a tad pricey, but if your dad’s a certified meat lover you can’t go wrong.
Trekurious & Little Adventures team up for another fun beer & bikes & steak idea, which includes a fun sunset ride around Colombo followed by beers and a hearty meal at the Bavarian. It’s Rs. 6000 and looks like a lot of fun. Check it out here.
They have another, less beery option too, called the Morning Freedom Cycle ride which starts at 7am, takes you on a bike ride around CMB’s famous independence spots, and winds up with breakfast at Barista’s. It’s a little pricey at Rs. 5500 a head, but you can read further here.
You can also try Trekurious’ usual Classic Film Night, this time with a Father’s Day themed Bond flick, Dr. No. It starts at 7 PM, features a martini, panini and popcorn and comes to Rs. 2000 a head. We went for the Mother’s Day version and really loved it. Check it out here.
Possibly the best thing you can do though, is take your Dad to do something you know he loves. Take a history buff to the museum, keep up for an hour or two with a fitness freak at the gym, or download an HD flick for a old timey cinephile.
Food
Most 5 star hotels and restaurants are having discounts and promos for Father’s Day, although it appears to be the general lunch-brunch with a hefty price tag. The big hotel deals include the Kingsbury’s Seafood Lunch at Rs.3500 plus a bunch of draws and gifts, or the Cinnamon Lakeside’s high tea and dinner.
The Bayleaf is having an interesting menu for the 15th too, with a bunch of new dishes. Have a look at the menu and make reservations here.
Although I think the best Father’s day meal is really something you make yourself. You probably know your Dad’s favourite meal. It’s sweet and personal if you just go online, look up a recipe and whip up a storm. If you can cook, he’ll love it. If you can’t cook, he’ll love the gesture.
Gifts & Other Ideas
Hameedia is having an interesting Father’s Day, hosting their customers and their fathers’,and 100 disadvantaged children at Excel World. It’s a sweet idea, you can learn more about it here.
The Soup Bowl is also conducting a lovely song & soup session at the Brohier Elders Home on the 14th evening. Drop by and show some love to the Dads who need it most.
I’d also recommend sponsoring a child’s education or an elderly person’s food for a year in your father’s name. It’s a beautiful gesture and shows how you’ve matured as a person- something every father wants to see. Try SOS villages or just ask around your local creches and old age homes.
Something personalized is always great too. If you’re making bank, you could get a nice designer watch or pen and get it engraved with something you two share. Or even just his name, if he’s a minimalist chap. Lexon Gift Depot does some nice gifts, you may want to check them out too.
If your Dad enjoys a drink or two, a bottle of his favourite expensive Scotch is something that’s personal, and should remind him of you every time he has a special peg. Try Ariyapala’s for a solid selection at basic mark up price or Victoria’s.
