How To Watch The FIFA World Cup Online (In Sri Lanka).

UPDATE: Uh, iPlayer doesn’t really have all the games live, only some of them.
UPDATE UPDATE: itv.com streams a lot more, thank you Liara.

tl;dr – Download and install the ZenMate plugin for Google Chrome (the web browser). Click on that icon in your browser (top right). Turn it on. Change your public location to UK. Visit BBC iPlayer. Watch the World Cup.

We recently posted on where you can watch the first week of the FIFA World Cup in Sri Lanka, and a user-added sleep planner. Now here’s a guide to watching the World Cup online. It’s pretty simple. The tl;dr above explains what you need to do, but here’s it broken down a bit further.

What You’re Doing: The BBC and ITV have the rights to show the World Cup, but only to people in England. We use ZenMate to pretend like we’re in the UK and then boom, you can watch the World Cup. Among other things.

How To Do It

  1. You need a good Internet connection (Dialog 4G, etc). Even then it may be choppy.
  2. You need to use or install the Google Chrome browser
  3. You need to download and install the ZenMate Chrome plugin
  4. Turn on ZenMate (in your browser, shield at the top right, next to your tabs)
  5. Click on the flag in the middle, change it to UK
  6. Visit BBC iPlayer or ITV.com
  7. Find the live match, sometimes you have to dig around the site
  8. Watch

Conclusion

That’s about it. It’s still better to watch the World Cup over terrestrial or satellite TV (no buffering) and if you do your data bill will likely by huge (tens of thousands of Rupees). But it is possible and, for a few matches, may make sense.
