New at The Good Market (October 2014).

This is a post from 2014, and is outdated.

If you’re hoping to drop by at The Good Market at Diyatha Uyana this Thursday there are a few new stalls worth checking out.

Elixir of Life (The Bee and Honey Stall)

Okay so this stall didn’t really have a name so I just came up with one (very creative, I know). As the name suggests this stall is a one stop shop for everything bee honey related. Edit- We were told the name of the stall is “”Elixir of Life””.

Besides the usual bee honey (Rs. 500 for 180ml), they’ve also got honey combs (Rs. 500 per slab) which are actually really yummy. It’s pretty expensive but it’s apparently very difficult to harvest. We don’t really know any other place that sells honey combs so this is pretty awesome.

If you ever wanted to have your own supply of bee honey at your house, you can buy a bee colony from these guys for Rs. 6000. They sell everything you need from smokers, to veils, to water moats. When we asked the gentlemen at the stall he told us that the bees are almost entirely self sufficient. The only thing the owner would have to do is to use the smoker to put the bees to sleep before extracting the honey from the top stand of the box.

Teen Lounge

Teen Lounge is a new stall at the good market that’s run by a couple of teenagers (with the help of their parents). They offer whole wheat waffles, whole wheat pasta and corn.We think it’s great the younger generation is getting involved with The Good Market.

We tried out their waffle with strawberries and cream (Rs. 150) and it actually tasted a lot like a normal waffle. It’s not as thick as a normal waffle since whole wheat flour doesn’t rise as much as normal flour but there’s hardly any difference in taste, which is good since this is healthier.

We couldn’t try their pasta but it looked pretty good. They’ve got seafood pasta for Rs. 250 and chicken pasta for Rs. 300 with a bunch of different sauces to choose as from.

Ceylon Catch (Frutti De Mare)

Ceylon Catch is a new seafood stall that serves up cocktail shrimps (Rs. 200 & Rs. 400), hot butter cuttlefish ( Rs. 400) and cuttlefish bites (Rs. 300). They fry the seafood throughout the day so everything is pretty fresh.

We sampled the cocktail shrimps and the HBC. The shrimp were okay but nothing special, it could do with a bit more spice.

The hot butter cuttlefish on the other hand were good, with a crunchy batter and nice hit of chilli. It would make for a good bite to have while walking around visiting stalls, if you don’t mind spending Rs. 400.

What Ceylon Catch is really looking to showcase here is the quality of the produce, which is undeniably fresh and well sourced. They mostly export to the US, Japan and Canada but now they’re produce is available to locals as well. They do deliveries Monday to Friday from 10.00 am – 6.00 pm. You can call them up on 0766 644 644.
