Mango Mango Indian Restaurant.

When it comes to decent family dinner/lunch out in Panadura strip, Mango Mango Indian Restaurant is arguably the most popular option. A resto managed by the Alankulama Holdings, this one does Indian fare, but with a Lankan twist.

Food & Drinks

The menu here is comprised of meats, seafood, and veg dishes, cooked in different styles – masala, tandoor and kadai etc., alongside a range of rotis.

A biriyani and curries were what we had in mind, but unfortunately, they have only one biriyani on the menu, and that's a veg one. Hence, we had no option other than opting for roti and curries.

We were quite confused about the Butter Chicken (Rs. 495). Orange in colour, it was just a creamy gravy doused with tomato and onion pieces. And chicken? nope, not a single chunk. All we found were the teeny tiny bits which you can barely see. I mean, how hard is it to make a chicken curry with actual chicken pieces in it?

As for the flavour, it was spiced well, but nowhere near the authentic butter chicken.

In comparison to the Butter Chicken, this Paneer Tikka Masala (Rs. 495) had a few redeeming qualities.

Its gravy was creamier, and hosted a good amount of spices, and had teamed up with cubes of chewy paneer swimming about. The paneer had absorbed all the spiciness of the gravy, and yet, its creamy flavours were not subdued, which we appreciate.

We paired the curries with some Onion Paratha (Rs. 110) and Butter Naan (Rs. 125).

With plenty of onion bits embedded, the Onion Parathas were good, but a little on the doughy side and had a crunch going on. The charcoal spots sure helped to boost up the flavour. The Butter Naan was huge – you can easily fill up on these. With a gentle slathering of butter, it had a few flecks from the grill and tender to touch.

Mango Mango has a bunch of drinks – juices, milkshakes, and lassi, and we tried the Lime Juice (Rs. 180). Offered with a few ice cubes floating on top, it was good as any Lime juice can get – very limey, not watered down and just the correct addition of sugar to balance out the flavours.

Service & Ambience

The interior here has a red and black theme going on, and is equipped to handle a crowd. It's spacious, and you'd see the normal family dining setup here.

The staff was pretty efficient, helpful and friendly. They'd give you recommendations if you ask for it.

Conclusion

Mango Mango has quite a reputation around the area. While there is room for improvement, don't hesitate to try them out if you are passing Panadura and in a mood for a filling meal.
