The Lankadhara Society – The Ballika Home.

The Sri Lankadhara Society’s Ballika Home is home to 43 young girls aged between 5 to 18 years of age. Most of these little ones have undergone many a tragedy in their young lives. Some have been orphaned and abandoned by their own parents, while others have been victimized. Some are not orphans but have been handed over to the home because of parents who are unfit to take care of them.

The Lankadhara Society makes it a priority to come alongside these abandoned girls to give them a home, a hope and a future. The home provides residential care. The Ballika Home is a home away from home which provides the security their own homes could never provide for them. It is a safe place for these destitute children to be nurtured and loved and find a footing in life.

The children attend school up to the General Certificate of Education Advanced Level. Their school curriculum is supplemented with extra help in subjects such as spoken English, computing and vocational skills such as sewing, cookery, hand work and horticulture as well as in aesthetic pursuits such as art, music, dancing and singing. While providing all the above, the organisation takes their care one step further by providing counselling which is invaluable in rebuilding their shattered lives.

If you would like to connect with the home, the home organises programmes for day/night excursions to places of interest and visiting the theatre, cinema etc, or plan a day with the girls, around a meal and fun activities.

Invest by donating towards the Sponsorship Programme. All donations are utilized to open savings accounts for the girls, as well as to meet their special needs – extra medical attention, vitamin supplements and clothing. The funds from their savings accounts provide for financial stability one day in their future when the girls leave the Home at 18 years of age. The home assists in providing suitable places of employment. The management of the home follow their progress and on occasion provide financial support to new job entrants to tide over their probationary periods when in employment. The focus is to rehabilitate broken lives and provide for a better future by providing them opportunities and helping them grow into accomplished and self-confident young women, fully-equipped to face the world.

The Sri Lankadhara Society is a non-governmental, humanitarian organisation founded in 1922 by philanthropists, the late Dr. and Mrs. W.A. de Silva who donated their spacious home situated on three acres of land at Wellawatte as a shelter for less fortunate girls and women whilst providing for their education and skills training.

The institution not only runs a home for destitute girls but also runs a senior citizens home, an elders day care centre, an infant’s home and a preschool/dare care centre. The Lankadhara Society is a Government approved charity – No. LLB 13096.
