The Chocolate House.

The Chocolate House down Deanston Place is an extension to their candy shop in Wellawatte. Aside from the imported chocolates, here they also have a tiny restaurant that serves up a few chocolate/candy based desserts – from rolled ice cream, milkshake to Nutella dipped waffles.

Food & Drinks

Their ice cream based desserts and milkshakes, you can either go with one of your favorite chocolate brands – such as KitKat, Kinder Bueno, Milkyway, Snickers, Mars, Toffee Crisp, Crunchie, Wispa, Doubledecker, Galaxy, M&M's, Aero Peppermint, Dark Chocolate, Skittles, Dairy Milk, Maltesers, and Ferrero Rocher or, you can simply choose a flavor to go with – Nutella & Banana, Strawberry, Mango, Milo, Coconut Cookie, Oreo, Brownie, Faluda, Coffee.

To start off, we ordered up this Snicker Milkshake (Rs. 590). Involving the usual chocolate ice cream, milk and generous amount of Snicker bits, this one was an absolute treat. It was thick, with a good consistency and boasted a nice peanutty flavor that comes from the Snicker bars, while balancing out the milk and chocolate ice cream flavors to perfection.

The Fried Stone Ice Cream (Rs. 790) with Ferrero Rocher was essentially a chocolate ice cream blended with a heap of Ferrero Rocher bits, and topped with chocolate sauce, sprinkles, candy-coated chocolate, and a wafer. They use supermarket ice cream (Highland we presume), pound it using a fried ice cream machine with the flavors/chocolates. It was quite good, because let's admit – it's chocolate ice cream mixed in with more chocolate, and garnished with a bunch of flavor additions; what's not to love?

We also tried their Vanilla flavored Fried Roll Ice Cream (Rs. 790) with Maltesers. I like my vanilla ice cream to be more vanilla-like than sugar, and this did not deliver. It was milky and very sweet, and the added Maltesers didn't do any favors either. Again, it's a hefty portion, so it's shareable, but would we rather pick this, instead of other rolled ice cream parlors in Colombo? Nah, I don't think so.

Topped off with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, a drizzle of chocolate sauce, and a generous slathering of good old Nutella, the Nutella Dipped Waffle (Rs. 450) certainly impressed us. Although, only the top half of the waffle was actually cooked right with a slightly crispy outer layer, while the bottom half was quite rubbery and very doughy.

Service & Ambience

The service was fine. Our order arrived  to our table within like 15 minutes, and the staff seems to know their way around the menu.

The interior here is done with minimal effort. There's a bunch of glass-topped tables and normal chairs with plastic backs for you to sit down and enjoy your desserts peacefully. We spotted a few pictures on the wall, featuring some of their desserts, while the other corner of the restaurant has shelves and shelves of chocolate and candy which you can actually purchase, if you have some extra cash to spend.

Conclusion

While there's certainly room for improvement, The Chocolate House is like sugar lovers' paradise and we enjoyed our experience here. Their ice cream portions are made for sharing, so take a friend (or two) if you want to try them out.
