Geek HQ.

Geek or not, we all like food. But, it's special and exciting when there's a restaurant that particularly caters to your various interests.

This is why Geek HQ is already a favorite of ours. Opened last month, it's the first geek-themed restaurant here that captures the rising popularity of geek culture in Sri Lanka. Be it comics, games, movies and the myriad fandoms and interests or food, it is a restaurant that's geared for every kind of geek, or basically, for pretty much anyone who enjoys good food.

Food & Drinks

The menu here is comprised of smoothies, coffee, milkshakes, salads, soups, desserts and a bunch of mains, which all of the names look like they come from a geeky chef's cookbook. Every name is inspired by some popular comic/game/TV show characters, comic slang, and meta-references – The League of Assassins, The Stark Tower Special, Mr. Freeze's Day Off, and Puddin! to name a few.

We started off with The Ballad of The Village Bard (Rs. 650). It's essentially a portion of grilled chicken and ham, served on a bed of soft vegetable puree and tempered veggies, and topped off with a generous layer of buffalo mozzarella.

The grilled chicken had a firm rind, while the inside was all soft, and had minimal seasoning. But never fear, all the flavors you want, you can absorb it from the vegetable puree itself, and make sure not to leave the milky, chewy buffalo mozzarella while you're at it. This one was so filling, so you can actually try it as a main dish as well.
We've been eyeing on Geek HQ's Facebook for quite a while now, and this right here is one of the reasons why. Taking "the bigger the better" viewpoint very seriously, this monstrous burger introduces itself as It's Clobberin' Time (Rs. 1450). It's piled high with four, massive patties (chicken/beef, we opted for the latter), a layer of ham, sausages, cheese, lettuce, and a bullseye, which puts the popular "whoppers" in Colombo to shame.

Let's start with the bun. It was tender to bite, almost like the bun you get in McDonald's, and served with a generous drizzle of mayonnaise and tomato sauce on top. That follows the layer of sausages, and beneath that, there's the ham, which was cooked well with a hint of crispiness.

Then comes the neatly stacked beef patties, which were incredibly juicy, succulent and cooked through, leaving a firm, slightly crispy exterior, while the inside is deliciously soft. The cheese slice in the middle certainly elevated the flavors, especially with the splendidly runny yolk in the mix.

It takes more than one person to consume this, so take a friend (or two) if you want to conquer this beast of a burger.

The Wedge Antilles (Rs. 500) AKA, the potato wedges were a tad steep in terms of pricing but had an incredible flavor. Chunky and well-seasoned with hits of salt and chili, it had a nice crispy coating. Geek HQ's has a number of desserts that they serve with a side of King Cone Ice Cream² 's ice cream, but unfortunately, none of them were available on the day we visited, as they have run out of ice cream. Therefore, we settled for this beautifully crafted Chocolate Cupcake (Rs. 180). The cake itself was moist and spongy, but the crown of frosting was a teensy bit sugary for some of us.

*Pictured above – Teen Titans (left) and Up In The Sky (right)

Served in a massive jar, Teen Titans (Rs. 400) is Geek HQ's version of smoothies, and we got the strawberry flavored one. According to what we heard, this is the most popular smoothie out of the lot. It wasn't necessarily rich with natural strawberries but boasted a strong strawberry syrup flavor, and had the consistency on point. It's your fix for a sunny Colombo day (which is basically almost every day).

Up In The Sky, or the Cafe Latte (Rs. 450) didn't disappoint either. Frothy, milky and light, it carried a good caffeine punch. Probably something you'd want to try out if you're battling with Monday (or any day) blues.

Service & Ambience

From action figures to posters to paintings on the wall, every bit of interior here is Geek related and absolutely chilling. Even the music adds up to it. Make sure to be careful if you're taking pictures of the action figures. It's a minimum of Rs. 10000 fine for a damage you cause.  They've got a bunch of seating options – wooden chairs, couches, and even an outdoor smoking lounge. It's comfortable, very modern and aesthetically pleasing.

Well-versed and friendly staff, we didn't run into any problem regarding their service. They are quite good with the menu and knows what's available and what's not, and they'd give you recommendations if you ask for it.

Conclusion

We genuinely like Geek HQ. It's a haven of a spot for all the geeks out there but doesn't bar from anyone who'd want to indulge some good food and chill.
