Surfing Wombats.

After initially meeting in Australia, Romina and Kroot then visited Sri Lanka and fell in love with our breathtaking beaches, lovely people and the tropical vibes. Surfing Wombats is the result of their bonding, which is also a special place for travellers.

Whilst shamefully admitting to the fact that the only surfing I have done is online, this hostel is open to all surfers, amateurs and beach lovers like me.

I sand alone

Exiting the expressway and entering into Matara town, I hopped into a non-ac bus after a quick meal which included 2 King coconuts, 2 Egg roti and an Egg roll (which was quite satisfactory and needed since I travelled on a poya day and majority of the vendors decide to stay closed).

Midigama beach – as stated before, breathtaking and can be compared to quicksand (in a positive manner). One glance and you are hooked on for life.

Accommodation

The hostel has a bunch of accommodation options – dorms (bed in bed 8 mixed dormitory room), private rooms (Deluxe double room, a triple room) and tents.

With a price range from Rs. 1800 – 4000, the prices change depending on the season and timings, type of room and deals available. Therefore, check www.surfingwombats.com for updated rates.

Let's chill man!

Are you still jet-lagged after a long flight? Need to cool down before you check in? Feel like jamming with your gang? Yoga to check out the chilling area and ensure you discover your inner (depending on your idol) or just stretch your legs and imagination.

Dining & Drinks

From hot and chocolaty cappuccino that captures your soul (brand intended) to Italian pizzas, special smoothies and Italian frittata, they host an extensive menu along with the flexibility to proceed as your appetite or budget.

Once again I started my weekend out of Colombo with a freshly served Cappuccino and did some soul searching (I'll try to stop these freshly brewed puns, but there's no guaran-tea!). A combination of locally produced coffee with the barista expertise is your energy drink after not so long drive from Colombo and again from Matara town.

Dinner

Here I am, another solo adventure and almost debuting my version of Man vs food! I did not have the usual appetite during dinner which was well fed during my landing at Matara. Therefore, I manage to finish 8 slices of the Wombat Special Pizza. Besides the base having a rubber-like texture and taste, the base was prepared with pizza sauce and mozzarella plus the topping which included chicken, onions, pepper, basil and olive oil (they also deliver).

Breakfast

After 8 slices and less than 8 hours of sleep, I wake up very hungry (that's right, very hungry). After some extensive menu research and uncontrollable sound of music from hungry land, I decided to ask for a recommendation. After much anticipation and curiosity, the Italian Frittata was laid before my eyes and heart.

Let the hunger games begin!

Complimented with three pieces of freshly baked bread (in-house), this dish was the best breakfast I've had in ages from a European menu. Oozing with cheese and eggs and bursting with flavours, I was glad that I did not have to share it with a single soul (Yes, it was an eggs-cellent breakfast!).

After all that, I still had space for a thick and fresh smoothie – The Wombat Colado that includes Banana, Coconut, Pineapple, Coconut Milk, Cinnamon and Lime.

Service

The enthusiastic and friendly staff and the hosts of the hostel offer a service with a smile. Lost in the menu? Go ahead and ask for the day's special or personal recommendations. Thirsty after a surf session or need a boost to keep the conversation going with your group, it may be a glass of water or your favourite cuppa, these guys go out of the way to ensure you get the best service whilst you patiently wait to try the day's special.

Tall order? No worries, the well-trained staff at Surfing wombats can handle it!

Overall

A popular destination for amateur and professional surfers alike, Midigama beach is truly blessed with Surfing wombats as it offers the vibe, food and beverage and company that you need before and or after you hit the waves.
