The Grand Iftar Spread by Ramada Colombo.

By RR

During this blessed month of Ramadan, Muslims around the globe come together to observe day long fasts which they break at dusk. Ramada by Wyndham Colombo has also joined in on the spirit of the month with their grand Iftar Buffet. We absolutely had to drop by to try it out and here’s the scoop from their impressive Iftar spread.

Walking in, the dimly-lit interior was quiet and calm, giving a peaceful touch to the evening. As per tradition, we broke our fasts with sugar-coated dates and moved on to the starters. There was a choice between the traditional Kanji (rice-porridge) which is a staple at every Iftar table and Cream of Chicken soup. We especially loved the mutton Kanji, which hit home with its explosion of flavours. The soup was equally delicious and had a perfectly smooth consistency to it.

Followed by this, there was a variety of cold salads, breads and cheeses to try from. The refreshing selection of salads is definitely worth mentioning which included Tabbouleh, Greek salad, Thai Beef salad, Fattoush salad, all of which were deliciously wholesome. The Arabic bread paired with hummus is another combo worth mentioning and did its Middle-Eastern heritage justice.

Amidst all the usual Iftar delicacies, there was also a dish of different types of sushi which was a more than welcome surprise!

For short eats, there were mini-pizzas, fish patties, feta cheese and spinach fatayers, vegetable pakoras and Thai chicken cutlets to choose from (or you could just have one of each, like we did)

For drinks, we had a refreshing watermelon juice and another Iftar-must have, Faluda, which wasn’t too sweet and was made just the way we like it.

For mains, we had the choice of steamed basmati rice, Pasta Napolitana or Bukhari rice. We opted for the Bukhari rice, yet another middle-eastern favourite, which was aromatic with a flavorful blend of spices. We had it alongside roasted potatoes, buttered vegetables, and grilled pumpkin which were all beautifully done. The protein options included pepper beef, braised chicken and grilled fish. We especially loved the grilled fish which was seasoned to perfection.

There was an entire section dedicated to the Indian Cuisine with Vegetable Biryani as well as Butter Naan. While the Fish Tikka, Butter Paneer and Dal Tadka were all top-notch, the Naan was a bit of a let-down. A slightly softer and crispier Naan would have paired everything together perfectly.

The dessert section is every foodie’s paradise. Cheesecake,Mousse, Baklava, Brownies as well as freshly cut fruit. You name it, they had it. By the time we reached the dessert section,we were way too stuffed. But you know what they say, there’s always room for dessert.

As far as cheesecakes go, the orange cheesecake was a show-stopper. We also loved the milk-chocolate brownies and we absolutely have to mention the “strawberry romance” which  was way too pretty to even consider cutting a slice (but we did, obviously). In case you didn’t realise already, the dessert section was easily our favourite.

At Rs.5,900/= per person, this grand spread is quite a good deal and is available everyday from 23rd March to 21st April.
