Sawan for Seven! A Gigantic North Indian Meal from Rosewood Ceylon.

By Shamrina Carim

If you’re craving an indulgent North Indian meal that brings together bold flavors and hearty portions, this biriyani feast is a winner. For LKR 13,500, you get a generous spread for seven people, perfect for a family gathering or a meal with friends;  (or even more because we were able to enjoy this delicacy for lunch and dinner, also the next day!)

This menu represents a North Indian-style Biriyani meal with complementary dishes. The presence of North Indian Mutton Biriyani, Tandoori Chicken, Egg Masala, and Brinjal Bartha suggests influences from Mughlai and Punjabi cuisine. The Mix Raita and Mint Chutney are common North Indian accompaniments, while Carrot Halwa (Gajar ka Halwa) is a classic North Indian dessert.

Whether you’re planning for lunch or dinner, just remember to order a few hours in advance to ensure your meal is freshly prepared. Here’s a breakdown of what we loved—and one small miss.

North Indian Mutton Biriyani – Aromatic & Flavourful

The star of the meal was undoubtedly the North Indian Mutton Biriyani. Massive portion and WORTH the price! The basmathi rice was perfectly cooked, each grain separate and infused with rich spices. The mutton was tender, well-marinated, and full of flavor, melting in the mouth with every bite. The balance of heat and aromatic spices made it a satisfying dish without being overwhelming.

Tandoori Chicken – Smoky & Succulent and comes in a box of two!

The Tandoori Chicken  was an absolute delight. Grilled to perfection, the chicken had a beautiful smoky char on the outside while remaining juicy inside. The marinade was spot on, with a mix of yogurt and spices that gave it a deep, well-rounded taste. It paired perfectly with the biriyani, adding a nice protein kick to the meal.

Egg Masala – Creamy & Comforting

The Egg Masala was a unique dish added to our non typical Biriyani menu. The eggs were boiled and cooked just right, and the gravy was thick, rich, and packed with  blended lentils, tomatoes, onions, and warming spices. It was the perfect dish to scoop up with a spoonful of biriyani, adding a creamy, slightly tangy contrast.

Brinjal Bartha – New Side Dish for the Win!

Even for those who aren’t usually fans of brinjal, this dish was a hit. The Brinjal Bartha had a lovely smoky depth, complemented by mild spices and a touch of sweetness. It was soft, well-seasoned, and added a nice vegetarian touch to balance out the meal.  Might not suit everyone’s palate since we are more accustomed to the Sri Lankan Brinjal Moju. But the Bartha is worth the try for a decadent taste in the mix.

Mix Raita – Cool & Refreshing

The Mix Raita was a much-needed cooling element in this spice-packed feast. Made with fresh yogurt and finely chopped vegetables, it helped balance the heat from the biriyani and curries. On a side note, the Raita was a bit watery, but remained flavourful. So the cooling agent of the menu still gets a thumbs up!

Mint Chutney – A Slight Miss

While everything else was impressive, the **Mint Chutney** didn’t quite hit the mark. It lacked the fresh zing expected from a good mint chutney, feeling a bit watery and less infusion of coconut as expected. That being said, this might come down to personal preference—some may still enjoy it!

Carrot Halwa – An Absolute Banger!

The Carrot Halwa rounded off the meal beautifully. It was warm, rich, and had just the right amount of sweetness. The texture was smooth, and the mild nuttiness from ghee, almonds and cashews broight in the Mughal flavours in the right track as a treat to finish from the delicious spread.

For the price, portion size, and overall taste, this North Indian Biriyani feast is definitely beyond value for money. Authentic flavours, rich in culture and history, the dishes complement each other well, with generous serving sizes. Whether you’re hosting a get-together or simply treating yourself, this meal is a fantastic choice. Just remember to place your order a few hours in advance!
