Nihonbashi by Dharshan – Review.

Written by Linara Wimalaweera

When it comes to Japanese fine dining in Colombo, few names stand as tall as Nihonbashi. For nearly 30 years, Chef Dharshan Munidasa has been building a bridge between Japan and Sri Lanka serving authentic dishes with local ingredients while embracing the spirit of washoku, the Japanese philosophy of harmony in food and life.

We stopped by to experience a little of what this iconic restaurant has to offer, and it turned into a memorable evening of flavours, textures, and stories.

What We Tried

We began with the Karapincha Tempura (LKR 1,700) familiar curry leaves transformed into something new. Crispy and aromatic, it felt like a playful nod to Sri Lanka through a Japanese lens.

Next came the Olive Oil Kake Tai Cha (LKR 3,800), a theatrical dish where hot olive oil is poured over delicate sea bream slices right at the table. Rich yet refined, the fish paired with the creaminess of the yolk made this one stand out, both for its flavour and presentation.

The Ten Sabi Temaki (LKR 1,600) had pure warm prawn tempura wrapped in cool wasabi mayo rice and crisp nori. The contrast of textures made it one of our favourites of the day. The crunch, the creaminess, the heat it reminded me of the kind of sushi rolls you keep reaching for even when you’re full.

We also tried the Shake no Aburi Sushi (LKR 2,200), lightly torched salmon that was buttery and tender.  The Norwegian salmon, seared just enough to release its oils, melted into the rice with a buttery richness that lingered long after.  If a friend asked me what dish really captures Nihonbashi’s elegance, this would be the one I’d point to.

For something heartier, the Kani Chawanmushi (LKR 3,800) presented a savoury custard crowned with crab. The flavours were subtle, almost delicate, yet the presence of the crab added just enough depth to make this comfort food elevated.

The Shirunashi Ramen – Spicy Prawn Soupless Ramen (LKR 6,000). With no broth to hide behind, every strand of noodle carried the intensity of prawn stock, garlic, chilli, and oil. It was bold, spicy, and flavourful dish that felt perfectly suited to the Sri Lankan palate while staying true to Japanese roots.

To end on a sweet note, we had the Shibuya Style French Toast (LKR 2,200). Made with Sri Lanka’s own kade paan, topped with strawberries, cream, and a drizzle of kitul treacle, it was indulgent yet familiar an ideal finish to the meal.

To sip alongside, we went with a refreshing iced tea (LKR 1,200), nothing fancy but perfectly balanced to cut through the richness of the heavier dishes. Sometimes simple is exactly what you need.

The Space

Dining at Nihonbashi is as much about the setting as it is about the food. The restaurant has been designed to embody serenity, intimacy, and Japanese minimalism while still keeping its Sri Lankan roots close at heart.

The highlight is the eight themed private dining rooms, each with its own distinct character. The Chikurin Room is inspired by bamboo groves, while the Samurai Room is decorated with an heirloom Japanese painting that adds depth and history. Other rooms incorporate traditional Japanese touches which are doors, warm wood finishes, and soft lighting—that make you feel transported straight to Japan.

To make the experience even more personal, each private room comes with a tablet and a speaker. This allows guests to place orders, call for service, or adjust settings without interruption, ensuring complete privacy and a seamless dining flow. Whether it’s an intimate family dinner, a business meeting, or a quiet celebration, the setup creates an environment where you can truly focus on the company and the food.

For a more open setting, the common dining area provides a bright, refined space that blends Japanese simplicity with Colombo’s modern dining culture.

Nihonbashi isn’t just a restaurant—it’s a culinary journey. Every dish tells the story of two cultures coming together. Combined with its intimate dining spaces and commitment to authenticity, it’s no surprise that Nihonbashi has earned its place on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list.

If you’re in Colombo and craving Japanese food made with heart, this is the place to experience it.
