Indian Destination Weddings Shift Towards Experience-Led Celebrations, Positioning Sri Lanka as a Rising Luxury Destination.

New industry insights reveal Indian couples are spending more, inviting fewer guests and prioritising experiences over extravagance, creating a significant opportunity for Sri Lanka’s luxury hospitality sector.

Indian weddings are undergoing a profound transformation. While destination wedding budgets continue to rise, guest lists are shrinking, signalling a new era where memorable experiences, meaningful travel and exceptional hospitality are becoming the true measure of luxury.

According to the Annual Destination Wedding Insights 2026 by WedMeGood, one in four Indian weddings is now a destination wedding, up from 18% in 2022. At the same time, the average destination wedding budget has increased to INR 58 lakh, compared to INR 51.1 lakh the previous year, while the average guest list has reduced from 420 guests for hometown weddings to just 280 for destination celebrations.

The findings reflect a decisive shift in consumer behaviour. Couples are choosing to invest less in scale and more in creating immersive, multi-day celebrations centred around family, travel and shared experiences.

This evolution is also reshaping how budgets are allocated. For luxury destination weddings exceeding INR 3 crore, 53% of total expenditure is now dedicated to venue, accommodation and food, reinforcing hospitality as the single largest investment within the celebration.

The report further highlights a growing preference for destinations that are easy to reach without compromising on luxury. Nearly half (44%) of Indian couples prefer destinations within a two-to-four-hour journey, while venue quality, cost, visa convenience and travel time have emerged among the most influential factors when selecting a destination.

Against this backdrop, Sri Lanka is rapidly strengthening its position within the region.

With visa-free entry for Indian travellers, direct connectivity from major Indian cities and an increasingly sophisticated luxury hospitality landscape, the island recorded more than 530,000 Indian arrivals in 2025, representing 27% year-on-year growth. The report identifies Sri Lanka as one of Asia’s fastest-growing premium destination wedding markets, benefiting from its proximity, value proposition and diversity of experiences.

“The modern Indian wedding has evolved beyond a single-day celebration,” said Tarek Medhat, Director of Sales & Marketing, Shangri-La Sri Lanka.

“Couples today are creating journeys rather than events. They are looking for destinations where families can celebrate, reconnect and experience something meaningful together. The wedding is still the centrepiece, but increasingly it is the experiences surrounding it that define the celebration.”

The research also demonstrates that venue selection is no longer driven by logistics alone. Aesthetics rank as the most important consideration (24%), followed by unique experiences (20%) and recommendations from previous couples (19%), highlighting the growing importance of venues that offer distinctive settings and memorable guest experiences.

These evolving preferences closely align with Shangri-La Sri Lanka’s two distinctive wedding destinations.

Recognised within the report among Sri Lanka’s top reviewed wedding properties, Shangri-La Hambantota and Shangri-La Colombo each cater to different wedding aspirations while collectively showcasing the breadth of experiences available across the island.

In Colombo, the hotel offers sophisticated city celebrations featuring the capital’s largest pillarlessballroom, expansive waterfront event spaces and the expertise of Bandhan by Shangri-La, the brand’s dedicated Indian wedding programme.

Meanwhile, Shangri-La Hambantota transforms weddings into immersive destination experiences across its 58-hectare beachfront estate, where celebrations unfold across beaches, tropical gardens and elegant indoor venues, complemented by championship golf, wellness experiences, wildlife encounters and authentic Sri Lankan cultural experiences.

“What makes Sri Lanka unique is the diversity it offers within a single destination,” Medhat added.

“Few places allow couples to combine the energy of a vibrant city, the serenity of the southern coastline, authentic cultural experiences and world-class hospitality within one wedding journey. As destination weddings continue to evolve, that diversity becomes one of Sri Lanka’s greatest competitive advantages.”

As Indian couples increasingly seek celebrations that are personal, immersive and experience-led, Sri Lanka is well positioned to capitalise on this shift. For Shangri-La Sri Lanka, it represents an opportunity not only to host weddings, but to showcase the very best of the destination through celebrations that leave a lasting impression on every guest.
