Yaal Virindu – Jaffna Food Festival: A Culinary Journey of Joy.

In collaboration with My Sister’s Kitchen by Thushara & Danu Innasithamby

By Shamrina C

Sri Lanka’s culinary scene just got a spicy, flavorful upgrade, thanks to the “Yaal Virindu – Jaffna Food Festival,” making its much-anticipated return at Ramada by Wyndham, Colombo. From October 12th to 15th, starting at 7 pm, food enthusiasts will have the opportunity to savor the essence of Jaffna cuisine in all its glory.

In its third consecutive year, the festival is a collaboration between the dynamic sibling duo, Thushara and Danu Innasithamby, founders of “My Sister’s Kitchen,” and the culinary prowess of Chef Mangala Arunashantha, Director of Culinary at Ramada. The concept behind Yaal Virindu is simple: to offer a delectable journey into the heart of Jaffna’s rich culinary heritage.

“Yaal Virindu” translates to the “Joy of Jaffna,” and it’s a joy we all should partake in. Jaffna cuisine, with its bold spices, fresh seafood, and the harmonious blend of ingredients, is a reflection of the region’s cultural diversity. Thushara Innasithamby, the driving force behind My Sister’s Kitchen, left her banking career to preserve and promote this unique culinary tradition.

Thushara has passionately prepared their standout dishes, the Red Rice Pittu or Pol Pittu, offering three mouthwatering options. Pair it with Crab curry and Gingerly Omelette for a delightful seafood experience. Alternatively, dive into the creamy goodness of Kiri Hodi with Eggs & Prawns and Pol Sambol, a prawn-infused paste. The third option, a simple yet delightful Gingerly Omelette with Pittu, is a nostalgic treat. Pittu isn’t just limited to savory pairings; it harmonizes beautifully with Mango, Jack Fruit, Bananas, and Jaggery, resurrecting forgotten culinary traditions.

Danu adds to the mystique with the mention of Thushara’s secret thunapaha recipe, among the 70 dishes generously infused with Jaffna’s flavors. It’s an invitation to indulge in culinary storytelling and cultural exploration. Based on this recommendation, we were delighted by the exotic Prawn curry, that left us in a memorable spot from this occasion.

The Ramada Colombo has been a pioneer in bringing Jaffna cuisine to the heart of the city, launching the first-ever Jaffna Food Festival in 2002. This year’s festival runs from October 12th to 15th, a four-day extravaganza that promises an authentic taste of Jaffna’s culinary heritage, all for just Rs. 5,950/- Nett per person.
