Holy crepes at Crepe Runner – Bambalapitiya.

By Maryam Rizwan

No one does crepes as good as Crepe Runner does. Starting from a humble food truck to opening 4 stores, winning the Merit award for the category Small Medium Enterprises 2020 organized by SLIM and being known for the best crepes in town is no easy feat.

As one of the first food trucks way back in 2019 and overcoming many hurdles, Crepe Runner can take a bow at how much they have accomplished given the circumstances. We all know the Crepe Runner truck in Marine drive which is temporarily closed due to parking restrictions, they also have a branch in Mount Lavinia, Kollupitiya, the one in Maharagama and the newly opened branch in Galle Road, Bambalapitiya – which we had the chance to visit.

Ambiance

When you first walk into the new branch, it is lively and fun. You notice the bold colours and different textures at first glance. It has ample amount of seating and gives off great vibes. Do observe the very large mural, it was a pretty nice mural spanning one entire wall.

The Crepes

Chicken Stuffed Crepe – This is a people pleaser and definitely a crowd favorite. The crepe is generously stuffed with minced chicken filling, crisps, pickles, fresh shredded cabbage and cheese. It was extremely filling and each bite had so much flavor. Even though there was no ketchup or any other sauce, the crepe was not dry. It was perfectly balanced and incredibly good!

Beef Steak Crepe – I know beef isn’t for everyone but if you do like beef, you should try this! Grilled beef topped with onion, cheese and sauce is definitely very unique. Savory crepes are usually not my thing but Crepe Runner does them so perfectly, it’s hard not to like it.

Kitkat, Nutella and Strawberries – What about this combination does not sound good? And no one is generous with their Nutella like Crepe Runner. Worth every rupee! The tanginess and freshness of the strawberries cuts the richness of the chocolate flavor. Try it and you will want to go back for a second one!

The Sides

Chicken Chips – A very interesting dish. Potato crips layered with the minced chicken filling used in the Chicken Stuffed crepe and topped with ketchup and oregano. Something that is so simple, yet is so good. There is plenty of filling to scoop up and eat for each chip. The benefits of using crisps instead of chips, they do not get soggy.

Beverages

Hot Chocolate – It comes topped with adorable marshmallows beside the amazing taste. This warm chocolatey treat was not overly sweet and tickled all the right tasted buds and left a lasting impression. It was even nice to drink on a very hot day, so that says a lot.

Oreo Milkshake – We have all tried oreo milkshakes places but no one des it better than Crepe Runner. Hands down, my favorite oreo milkshake. A thick milkshake with a strong oreo presence, double thumbs up.

Service

I just had to mention it, all the staff at the new branch were full of smiles and quick on their feet. Such a warm bunch of people.

Conclusion

Crepe Runner is a must try for anyone and everyone, you don’t need a sweet tooth or be a chocolate fiend to visit. They have a crepe for everyone and the best staff to serve you, so what could possibly go wrong? They are also quite wallet friendly – so extra reasons to visit!
