Falafel King.

Falafel King is a tiny food joint in Kollupitiya that whips up Arabic-style, vegetarian treats. They're only a couple of weeks old, so we popped in for a First Look.

Food

The food here is freshly customised, like Subway does. They've got a glass showcase in the front with all the ingredients that go into salads and pita-based sandwiches. The Sabich Sandwich (Rs. 390) had slices of tomato, cucumber, onion, tahini, fried eggplant, chopped up boiled eggs, and pickles. You can adjust its spiciness as you like, and we opted for the spiciest version of it.

The pita here was well fluffed up and soft, making for a pocketful of warmth for the generous filling. There was a lot of elements at play, which we appreciate, but the harmony of the flavours contributed by these elements can be improved a bit.

Sharing the same excellent pita, the Falafel Sandwich (Rs. 390) was comprised of tomato, cucumber, onions, tahini, French fries, pickles and of course, a few falafels. Again, they can work on combining the flavours of them in a better way, but pretty much like the Sabich, this was one hefty sandwich.

The falafel itself was quite flavoursome. Packed with chickpea flavour, it also had subtle notes of coriander and cumin seeping through.

The star of our experience at the Falafel King was the Hummus (Rs. 400). Creamy, but with a tinge of graininess to boot, the well-grounded chickpea flavour came through very nicely, along with a splash of olive oil and tahini. They had dusted it with paprika for an extra spicy kick.

It tastes amazing with these chunks of crispy garlic bread.

Drinks

As for drinks, we got the Lime Slushie and Passion fruit Juice, each priced at Rs. 250.

Both of the drinks were intensely sour, absolutely refreshing and managed to boast the natural fruity flavours.

Ambience & Service

Unfortunately, we don't have a proper picture of the ambience here. Perched down Duplication Road, right in front of Liberty Plaza, it's a very tiny space, but still quite nice as they've done a very nice job decorating it with pretty wooden furniture and lights. 8 – 10 people can fit in here at a time without any issue.

The service was quick, full of smiles and helpful. If you have any food allergies, or simply want to avoid certain ingredients in your sandwich, they'll happily customise them according to your preference.

Conclusion

Falafel King is quite new to the scene, but considering the generosity of their offerings, they're looking at a very good customer base. We're planning to drop by again within a couple of months for the full review.
