Mamas Galle Fort Guest House.

Mamas Guest House is a quaint little place in Galle Fort that’s been popular for its rice and curry, and is often confused with Mamas Galle Fort Roof Cafe. The two were once run under the same Mama who has been a cook for more than a decade, but now the family has branched out, and Mama now does her thing at the Guest House.

The Food

Of course we got their rice and curry, which arrives like a feast. For just Rs. 550 you get a bevy of sides and a large portion of rice. It tasted good, though nothing special.

We also got the garlic prawns for Rs. 675. There were plenty of prawns and they tasted good and juicy. The fries were okay as well. We downed it all with avocado juice and lassi (Rs. 225).

Ambience & Service

Mamas Guest House is basically a house, with random little knick knacks everywhere that make it seem very homely. The restaurant is upstairs.

The upstairs feels very homely too, with books at the window sill and some stained glass in the windows. It’s a pleasant space with wooden rafters in the ceiling, making it feel spacious. Since it’s also a bit like Mamas house, you might bump into a lady washing clothes in a basin in the washroom. The food arrived soon, and you might get to meet Mama herself in the kitchen downstairs.

Conclusion

Mama in a photograph – we met her too

Mamas Guest House is a decent place to stop by for some lunch. The food’s alright, the prices are good compared to regular Galle prices, and the atmosphere is very cosy.
