Roots Gelato (Colombo City Centre).

Desserts are always good delectable food to enjoy. And Italian frozen desserts? even better! Roots Gelato serves this purpose with their outlet in Colombo City Centre. They are located on the 2nd floor on the opposite side of Playtrix Sports Bar

As one of the two local gelato makers in the country, this is the third outlet by Roots Gelato one being at MC Food Court and the other at Crescat Boulevard.

The Gelato

Roots does gelato, and also sorbet – both premium and regular flavours neatly displayed in a showcase at their venture in CCC.

We are a fan of their Chocolate Biscuit Pudding Gelato (Rs. 400) and any reason to get our hands on one will not be overlooked. The flavour is every bit as good as we remember but we'd have preferred some more bits of biscuits in this. After all, it is made using delicious Bellissima CBP.

They have done a good job making the flavours cohesive and enjoyable while being absolutely chocolaty. The bitter notes of the chocolate make a bold appearance while the texture is gooey with Marie biscuits adding a light crunch to it.

Hazelnut Gelato (Rs. 400) was our second pick from the premium range of flavours. This one is also smooth as heck and not all that sweet. The hazelnut flavour runs all throughout the gelato while the milky flavour balances it out perfectly.

The Wildberry Sorbet (Rs. 250) had an eye-catching pink hue to it and packed a fruity flavour punch. This sorbet is indeed wild with a truckload of berry flavour, its sharp, invigorating and quite refreshing. But the flavour doesn't stick with you too long, it robs your taste buds for a few minutes and tapers off to a subtle swirl of sweetness. Leaving nothing but the need to get punched with the taste again.

We had high hopes for the Blueberry Cheesecake (Rs. 400) which was another pick from the premium range. It was blueberry alright, not too sweet and soft and not too thick. But somehow the cheesecake flavour happened to have missed the memo. We could only get faint notes of something in the vicinity of cheese, but not enough to justify the name.

Ambience & Service

We had no issues with the service. It's efficient and the person in the counter was polite. We got cupfuls to almost overflowing amount of these frozen goodies.

We think the place can hold about 20 to 25 people accounting to the seating space they have on both sides of the counter.

This is the only Roots Gelato outlet in the country that serves has a seating space and we appreciate it.

Conclusion

Roots make a good gelato (and sorbet too). They've been going strong at it for a while now and we are happy to see them improving and expanding. So, undoubtedly, if you are in CCC just walking around, it would certainly make your day better to grab some dessert by Roots Gelato.
