Saffron Restaurant.

Located in the birthplace of amazing but cheap food, Maradana, Saffron Restaurant has capitalised on the resources available and created a solid restaurant with some very appetizing food.

The Food

They have an assortment of food belonging to the Sri Lankan, Arabian, Indian and Chinese fare.

The Chicken Fried Rice (rs. 350) that we ordered could easily serve two people, and this was just the regular platter and not the large. Plentiful with chunks of chicken, the rice was perfectly fluffy, and the dices of fresh vegetables in the fray transformed the dish into one filling, wholesome platter.

The Faham BBQ Chicken Quarter (Rs. 350) was an absolute steal. A huge quarter of a chicken, exquisitely prepared, juicy and succulent; just the recollection of this dish makes my mouth water. The chicken had been marinated and grilled, and every pixel of flesh was perfectly flavoured and cooked. Paired with the naan that comes with it, absolutely heavenly.

The picture of the Beef Shawarma (Rs. 360) that we have, (for fear of unwrapping the entire thing we kept the cover on) does not do justice to how amazing it was. Tender, yet with firm chunks of beef filled to the brim, paired with mayo and fresh capsicum, along with a delicious paste, swept us off of our feet. The roti that it was wrapped in was also ideal; thin and slightly moist, spelling out perfect.

The Chicken Kurma (Rs. 450) that we got to go with the fried rice and the Butter Naan (Rs. 110), might have been the only dish that wasn’t as great as the rest. The curry was well prepared and appealing, just that the chicken that came with it was a bit chewy.

The butter naan too was not as buttery as expected, and neither was it fresh, giving it a slightly chewy taste. The Chocolate Milkshake (Rs. 220) and the Strawberry Milkshake (Rs. 200) were definitely worth it. The flavour in the chocolate milkshake tasted slightly distinct, but the Strawberry Milkshake was perfectly prepared.

The Lemon and  Mint (Rs. 250), had to be one of the best renditions of the Lemon and Mint. Complementing each other, and having the perfect amount of sweetness, it’s a notch above.

Ambience and Service

The place in itself is slightly small and might get a bit cramped up if there is a sudden influx of customers, but other than that, they’ve done whatever they can to create a pleasant atmosphere. They had a TV in the corner playing the cricket matches and every inch of the surface of the walls being adorned by a very unorthodox wallpaper, giving the place a Middle-Eastern vibe.

The staff at the restaurant were also really friendly and accommodating and helped us in every way possible. As we were leaving, they informed us about the fact that they do delivery and the next time we’re coming, that they can have the food prepared if we do pre-order.

Conclusion

All in all, our experience at Saffron Restaurant was quite relishing, and the food, well worth the money spent. Regardless of the fact that they did have small banter between the staff, the shouting of orders and everything that entails such a place, we also enjoyed the hustle and bustle and everything that you usually don’t find in the kadeys at Maradana.
