For those looking for healthy food in Colombo, the choices are limited, but The Salad Bar is looking to change that. They’re a small set up based in Dehiwala that offers a range of salads at affordable rates. The best part is that they deliver (through Quickee).
The Salads
Finding a good salad in Colombo can be tough, much less finding one that you can get in a rush. That’s why we were excited to hear about The Salad Bar. They used to have their own small shack next to Paan Paan in Rajagiriya, but they only do delivery now. They’ve got a good selection of vegetarian and non vegetarian salads that are priced between Rs. 300 – Rs. 550. They’ve also got this delivery option where you can make your own franken-salad with a selection of their ingredients, which is pretty neat.
The chicken caesar salad (Rs. 425) has all the essentials – grilled chicken, romaine lettuce, croutons, parmesan cheese and a creamy caesar dressing. The salads are actually pre-made and packed in a fridge so that you can grab it and go. We weren’t sure how fresh the salads would be, but they turned out just fine. The chicken was slightly overcooked but still tasted good and the veges, along with the tasty dressing came together well.
The smoked salmon & spinach salad (Rs. 550) comes with spinach, radish, cucumber, smoked salmon and a honey lime dressing. This would be perfect for those on low carb diets. It’s super fresh and the dressing adds a great mix of sweetness and acidity. The only change we would like to see is the salmon cut into smaller pieces.
Conclusion
We think The Salad bar is a great addition to the local food scene. Their salads are fresh, filling and tasty, and the fact that they deliver makes them that much more accessible.
