1979 Coco Hut.

1979 Coco Hut is the rice & curry counterpart of 1979 Restaurant. They've got a nice space right next to 1979 premises, with a superb gami vibe to it, and the stuff they've got are value for money too.

Rice & Curry

Like most rice & curry spots in town, they present their goodies in clay pots and serve them on lotus leaves neatly placed on a pun watti. You can pick five curries to go with your rice, and that includes a protein of your choice too.

On the day we visited, they had only chicken, egg, pork and fish, but if you're lucky, you'll be able to get prawns, cuttlefish and mutton too.

My partner got the Chicken Rice & Curry (Rs. 240) which he accompanied with amberella, dhal, brinjal moju and gotukola sambol. The chicken piece was hefty and immersed in a gravy full of spices which paired really well with the fluffy red rice. With a little bit of tang from amberella, and a swirl of sweetness from brinjal moju while dhal adding some creaminess, it was a successful plate of rice with well-balanced flavours. My plate of Fish Rice & Curry (Rs. 240) didn't disappoint either. Boasting with rich curry notes, the thalapath (Indo-Pacific Sailfish) was cooked well and contributed to the spicy aspect of things in my meal. The dhal and beetroot curries helped to take down a notch by being milky elements on the plate, while the cucumber salad added for a good crunch.

The only letdown was the polos (young jackfruit) curry. Albeit mushy for our liking, it seemed to have a good amount of spices infused, but not enough. Some goraka (Malabar tamarind) would have easily upped the flavours of this one.

Lured by the aromatic whiff of karapincha (curry leaves) and other spices, we quite enjoyed the Pork Curry (Rs. 140) too. There were both meaty and fatty cuts of pork lavished with a rich paste of curry, making every bite so flavoursome. Some paratha or kadey paan would have been ideal to go with this one.

Ambience & Service

They have put a lot of thought and effort into its interior, to make it look like a rural house made of clay – like a scene from a Sri Lankan teledrama.

The roof here is decorated with woven coconut leaves, while the walls have that wattle and daub touch to them. Coupled with the wooden benches and tables, it all adds up to its unique charm.

We didn't run into any problems in terms of service either. The lady and the gentleman behind the counter were polite and quick on their feet, and we received our food without any delay.

Conclusion

All in all, we liked our experience here. It's a good place if you're looking for some superb rice and curries around Boralesgamuwa area. Make sure to get there as early as possible, so you'd have more options to choose.
