KBQ Korean Barbecue.

KBQ is sadly closed now

KBQ is an interesting and tasty Korean fried chicken shop in Ethul Kotte.

KBQ is a unique fried chicken shop in Ethul Kotte, next to Rama’s Tea House and across from Diyawanna Oya (Good Market). We’re not authorities on authentic Korean fried chicken, but this is definitely different, and quite good.

The Food

Box of fried chicken

KBQ’s main stock in trade is fried chicken. We tried the 7-piece box for Rs. 790. At nearly Rs. 115 a piece it ain’t cheap, but it’s competitive with KFC. The pieces are generous sized and tasty.

Chicken leg

This is a chicken leg. It was good.

They also have a solid Chicken & Rice meal (Rs. 320) which is really tasty. Nice little bits of popcorn chicken, black bean sauce, a red sauce and what we think was pickled radish. The fried rice is uniquely seasoned with what we think was sesame oil and tastes quite umami.

We had the pickled bits with the fried chicken as well. Nice combo. KBQ has an identity and all the food is what we’re familiar with (fried chicken, rice) but with a bit of a Korean twist. We dig it. The only downer was that they were out of kimchi (ubiquitous pickled cabbage). Our previous review by Nuwan called this ‘Korean achcharu’, which spurred many commments.

The Location

We got delivery (which they don’t usually do out of Rajagiriya, but we offered to pay and extra Rs. 100 and they were accommodating). If you’re dining in the place is roughly across from the Diyawanna Oya walking park (home to Good Market), just at the Kotte Road turn-off. They do deliver within Rajagiriya only, anything else would have to be begged for, as we did.

The location itself is clean and nice and had karaoke last time Nuwan checked.

The Service

The people at KBQ are very nice. They accommodated our order quite politely and realistically.

Conclusion

If you want a unique fried chicken experience, KBQ in Kotte does fried chicken with a Korean twist. We think it’s a tasty and different delight.
