Fun Facts About Cinnamon & Sri Lanka

Here are a few fun facts about cinnamon.

Posted by

Sri Lanka is one of the largest producers and exporters of cinnamon to the world, yet a lot of us don't know much about it. Cinnamon is not just a fancy hotel in Colpetty, it's so much more. Here are a few things you probably didn't know about it:

1. It is one of the oldest spices in the world, so old it's even mentioned in the Bible.

2. The two most popular types of Cinnamon are Ceylon (that's us!) and Cassia.

Ceylon cinnamon grows in Sri Lanka, Madagascar and the Seychelles, while cassia cinnamon comes from Indonesia and China. Also known as “true cinnamon,” Ceylon cinnamon is expensive and thus used much less frequently; unless labeled (and priced) accordingly, cassia cinnamon is the kind your supermarket will most likely stock.

3. Cinnamon complements both sweet and salty dishes and drinks (like hot toddy!)

4. It's a powerful antioxidant that helps reduce blood sugar.

5. It's capable of delaying the development of Alzheimer's.

6. The scent of cinnamon boosts brain activity.

7. It can be used as a lip plumper.

8. It is a natural food preservative because of its anti-microbial properties.
