Walk between multi-ethnic and multi-religious Pettah and Kotahena: the residential neighborhood of Colombo’s Chettiyar and Malayali elite during the nineteenth century, through Vivekananda Hill, Old Moor Street and Hultsdorp, the centre of legal activity today.

Learn more about the Kotahena riot of 1883, which may be one of the first documented Catholic-Buddhist encounters.

Remembering the first Vesak Holiday in 1885 celebrated with imported Japanese lanterns and ‘Carols’ sung to melodies of Christian hymns, this walk relates how traditions of Sinhala-Buddhists were framed in the 1890s.
