Every year hundreds of dolphins are accidentally killed or by Illegal fishing methods in the Sri Lankan waters.
Every year hundreds of dolphins are accidentally killed or by Illegal fishing methods in the Sri Lankan waters. In December 2016, we will take on a cycling challenge hugging the western coastline from Colombo to Kalpitiya to raise awareness and funds for the Ocean Watch SL's Training Workshop for Kalpitiya Tourist Boat Owners. We really want to help educate people about the need to protect and take care of these gentle cetaceans and other marine mammals.
About Ocean Watch SL - . Ashan Seneviratne, of Little Adventures and conservation biologist, Ranil Nanayakkara, of BEAR (Biodiversity Education & Research) co-founded Ocean Watch Sri Lanka (OWSL), a not-for-profit environmental Volunteer group that works towards the protection of marine life and habitats in Sri Lanka.
WHY KALPITIYA - In the past couple of year’s evidence has come to light of Dolphin’s being killed either due to by catch or directly targeted in around Kalpitiya Sea’s. The awareness programme will be conducted through a Cycling Tour and to promote Eco Adventure Tourism activity to discover, preserve our scenic coastline & marine life. In the past, we met with many local operators, who indicated that they would warmly welcome a similar training workshop in their region.
THE CHALLENGE – The ride covers 160km over 2 days. Terrain would vary from Tarmac, concrete, Paved, Gravel & compact sand. We will ride close as possible to the western coast up to Norochcholai. Please help by joining the ride or donating to this great cause, all your donations do great things.
