As artists we keep the curiosity going, and it has not killed the proverbial cat yet. I have done installations, performances, assemblages, mixed media, digital media, and I still learn more, every day, and surprise myself how easily everything flows out of my fingers - it resides all in my subconscious, my heart, guts, brain and past lives. Like Picasso, I can say;” I don’t search, I find art.” The inspiration comes from within, and so I have no guru to follow but mine.
Forty-two countries and thirty years on, I have made new works here, in this Serendib, where I came to find peace after grieving the loss of my mother and daughter in Germany. I have surprised myself with the outpour of emotions and soul searching in the process. It is in Sri Lanka that I have come and overcome my pain of those losses. A popular myth has it that an artist must suffer to make good art. That is very close to the truth, but not always necessary. An artist should not have to starve to death to make good art or sell. But the Van Gogh myth remains popular, despite having the father of modern Art who became a multi- millionaire from his paintings.
After twenty-two years and my first exhibition in Colombo, I am back to show my latest mind boggling images. Back then I called it mind stirring images.
