Ambulla, on Thimbirigasyaya Road, is a new-ish bath kade with a rustic feel that does all the usual lunch packets. While some are decent, some are really outstanding.
The lamprais is fairly unexceptional (it’s the same price as Sen Saal which is just a couple of doors down, and Sen Saal’s lamprais is better). The yellow rice with chicken is, however, exceptionally good. I would highly recommend it. At first when I was told the price (Rs 320) I had my doubts, but I was far from disappointed. Although a little oily, the flavours were immense and the accompanying curries were bang on. It was, in a word, delicious. The standard chicken rice and curry was also very tasty.
The packets here are a bit on the pricey side though not extortionate. Lamprais and yellow rice with chicken are both Rs 320, normal chicken rice and curry is Rs 200 and veg R & C is Rs 170. As well as these options they offer prawn and fish.
Ambulla isn’t the most exciting of places to hang out and eat. There isn’t any décor to speak of, just a few wooden tables and chairs, and I don’t think it had a fan but I may be wrong. Though it’s not a bad place to sit, it may be somewhere you’d want to get your food to takeaway.
