Bakeamazing is another one of Colombo’s many, many homebakers. They sell great brownies, cookies and general sugary desserts as well as savoury bites like rolls and buns.
Onwards with our tour of Colombo’s home bakers… seriously, it’s an infinite pit of cake pops, brownies and cookies we’re sinking into. Is it possible to cover every single home kitchen turned cupcake factory? I think not. This sugary world of aunties has the head (and sometimes the bite – there are rivalries, we hear) of Hydra – sink your teeth into the wares of one cupcakery, and you’ll discover another one almost instantly. Baked confections are clearly a lucrative business.
So where does Bakeamazing fit in? They’re new, about four months young – so you may not have heard of them yet. Run by a group of five ladies – each of who has her own baking specialty – the team covers a range of savoury and sweet goods: beef rolls, cupcakes, cheesecake brownies, normal brownies, cookies, mini doughnuts, muffins and so, diabetically, on. Their Facebook page isn’t quite as informative as some of the veterans, but the ladies are incredibly friendly and a phone call will get you prices, portions, etc.
What I like about Bakeamazing is that their cakes and cookes aren’t too sweet. You know what the Sri Lankan palate is like – sugar, sugar, more sugar. And so the majority of our local ‘patisseries’ – P&S, Fab, Sponge – tend to be liberal with all that sugar and icing. Bakeamazing has more restraint; their confections are subtler and you don’t get that startling saccharine shock – with the cookies and brownies you can really taste the separate ingredients: the biscuit, the chocolate, the nuts. That is, it isn’t all washed over by a crashing wave of sweetness. This is good.
The brownies (Rs. 90 a square), in particular, are excellent. Thick cakey cushions smeared with a gooey melted chocolate – rich, soft and overall very delicious. They’re not as elaborate as Deepika’s or as rich as Sita’s, but they strike a good, sticky balance. Highly recommended.
As the tide of home bakers rises, it’s difficult to know who to call. But you know who are favourites are – and Bakeamazing’s pretty up there.
