Butter Boutique is yet another force in Colombo’s brigade of home bakers, now also selling their wares at the Good Market every Thursday.
Cupcakes are not a scarce commodity at the Good Market; before you can swallow a bite of the one you’re holding you’re already at the next table laden with bright, sugary treats. The English Cake Company, Bake That Thing, Sweet Wishes by Vish, Butter Boutique. The list goes on, the list grows.
Butter Boutique is one the newer members of the Good Market. They offer the usual spread of dessert, cupcakes (Rs. 100 each), etc but also, more interestingly, home made ice cream and popsicles. While the desserts and cupcakes are nice, they’re a little unexciting. The lemon pound cake was very good, but the chocolate tart was just so-so – it was a little too gelatinous for my taste and also quite expensive at Rs. 350 a slice. Their ice cream, however, is fantastic (Rs. 250 for a large scoop). We tried the blueberry cheesecake – a cold and creamy dollop of what tasted essentially like a deconstructed blueberry cheesecake whacked on a crusty cone – delicious. We didn’t try the others, but the flavours look promising: rocky road, vanilla brownie, salted caramel.
The popsicles are worth a try as well and come in fun tropical flavours: narang, passion, mango smoothie. The mango lolly tasted pretty much like a cold mango pressed onto a stick – very fresh, very tasty. You could actually see the little threads of mango poking through the ice. This isn’t anything like the watered down cordial ice lollies you get at the supermarket. They use proper fruit.
While the cakes are fine, it’s the homemade ice cream and popsicles that make Butter Boutique worth queueing up for in the sun. They also do home orders.
