Nozomi Japanese Restaurant.

The vicinity of Pitakotte and Battaramulla has been booming with many new restaurants, and Nozomi is a new entrant. In fact, it's one of the two Japanese restos in the area, while the other one being Sushi Kai

Food

Nozomi has an interesting food menu, varying from sushi, sashimi, dumplings to ramen, bento, yakisoba and grilled goodies.

We were offered a complimentary appetiser – batter-fried salmon drizzled with a sweet sauce. A simple, yet flavourful snack to kick off your meal with. This portion of Crispy Salmon Maki (Rs. 980) includes eight pieces of neatly rolled maki. They have a fresh salmon filling, and golden-fried, crispy rice flakes on the outside, which adds a nice crunch.

Clocking in at a hefty Rs. 2400, the Nozomi Bento had a lot of elements at play – a serving of miso soup, tempura, sashimi, rice, teriyaki chicken, pickled radish, soy sauce, veggies, wasabi and pickled ginger.

The tempura was an assortment of both prawns and veggies, encased in the crispiest batter coating. We quite enjoyed the miso soup. It was light, flavoursome and had hints of sardine seeping through.

Both tuna sashimi and veggies were fresh, and the pickled radish gave off a playful sweet and tangy kick. The rice was sticky, and the teriyaki chicken was packed with a load of salty, umami notes, along with a smoky undertone.

The Pork Ramen (Rs. 1200) had room for improvement. On the good side, its broth was excellent and the pork tasted fantastic, all thanks to soaking up all that flavour.

Unfortunately though, the egg was hard-boiled, and the noodles tasted like instant noodles.

[We actually had a chat about this with the owner after our meal and found out that they used to have better quality ingredients brought all the way down from Japan, but now struggling to do so due to the COVID situation. However, from what we gathered, they're supposed to get another batch of that pretty soon.]

Nozomi makes ice cream, and we opted for a cup of Passion fruit Cheesecake (Rs. 470). The base was sweet and had a tinge of sourness running through, which reminiscent of a mildly flavoured cheesecake.

It would have been even better if they can pour in the passion fruit flesh as they serve the ice cream.

Drinks

This glass of Avocado Juice (Rs. 390) was hella creamy, tasty, and had no sugar in it. You get to adjust its sweetness to your liking by using the sugar syrup they serve on the side.

We're pleased to announce that Nozomi has some great quality Sake, both hot and cold, priced at Rs. 980 per 100ml shot.

Ambience & Service

They have a nice, chilled out vibe here, with a dash of cosiness. The tastefully designed furniture and the glass-box like interior that allows the natural lights to filter through, enhances the ambience even more. Coupled with the quick, warm and inviting service, you're guaranteed to have a good dining experience here.

Conclusion

Nozomi offers an impressive selection of contemporary Japanese cuisine, and their execution is spot on. The prices can reach alarming heights based on what you order, so you might want to keep track of that.
