Spice can transform a dish from mundane to magnificent, weaving through flavours, and infusing it with layers of complexity that are subtle, refined, and exhilarating. Experiencing spice in its many forms – from delicate hints to bold statements, this truth was beautifully demonstrated during my culinary journey at Yi Jing, Ratnadipa. Over a delectable three-hour feast, Yi Jing, ITC’s flagship Chinese restaurant, proved its culinary prowess, setting a gastronomic heaven for adventurous food lovers in Colombo’s vibrant food scene.
Stepping into Yi Jing at ITC Ratnadipa for our lunch reservation, we meet with a welcome that exceeds our expectations. We are enveloped in a harmonious blend of traditional and modern Chinese decor with delightful aromas. The space is adorned with a palette of rich reds, earthy browns, vibrant yellows, and subtle oranges, creating an atmosphere of warmth and sophistication. The seating arrangement, on the other hand, is designed with comfort, quality, and authenticity in mind. The tranquil music playing in the background further enhances the dining experience, creating a serene backdrop for the conversation. Also, the lighting is carefully curated to accentuate the restaurant’s aesthetic, casting a gentle glow that enhances the beauty of the surroundings.
Our culinary journey at Yi Jing Ratnadipa was an enriching exploration of flavours and artistry, each course more captivating than the last. The adventure began with an inviting pot of Jasmine Tea, a fragrant and soothing prelude that was both aromatic and flavourful. The attentive staff kept our cups filled, setting a tone of impeccable service.
We started with the soups, and it is safe to say you cannot go wrong with these choices. The chicken hot and sour soup was a masterful blend of flavours, striking the perfect balance between tangy and spicy. Each spoonful offered a rich, velvety texture with tender pieces of chicken and fresh vegetables. The broth was comforting and whetting our appetites for the courses to come. The crab meat with egg white soup was equally impressive, if not more so. It featured delicate, sweet crab meat, perfectly complemented by the silky smoothness of the egg whites. The broth was light yet flavourful, with a subtle seafood essence that enhanced the overall taste.
Next, we moved on to the appetisers, where the Sichuan-style crispy prawns stole the show with a score of 11/10. It brought an explosion of taste with a perfect crunch and masterful blend of spices that danced on our tastebuds. Each bite revealed layers of flavour, from the initial crispy coating to the tender prawn inside, providing a kick of invigorating heat. The presentation was also a feast for the eyes.
The Chicken Char Sui Dumplings, crafted like elegant swans, were almost too beautiful to eat, but their exquisite taste made them irresistible. We could not resist taking hundreds of pictures of these artful creations, as the attention to detail was top-tier. The crisp exterior resembled wavy feathers, with a golden-brown hue that was visually striking. The white sesame seeds on both sides added a satisfying crunch, while the filling inside was a delightful paste of tender, flavorful chicken char siu. This combination of textures and flavours made each bite a memorable experience.
The Shrimp Rice Noodle Rolls followed, soft, juicy, and savoury sweet, adding another highlight to our meal. The rice noodle rolls were impeccably soft and tender. Biting into them revealed a burst of flavours. This dish showcased a perfect balance of simplicity and sophistication, offering a harmonious blend of textures, flavours, and garnishes.
We ordered two mocktails – one with passion fruit and the other with blueberry. While their names escape us, the unforgettable flavours and vibrant colours certainly do not. The passion fruit mocktail was a vibrant blend of tropical sweetness and refreshing with every sip. Its bright yellowish-orange hue mirrored the exotic essence of passion fruit, making it as visually delightful as it was tasty. The blueberry mocktail, on the other hand, was a symphony of rich berry flavours, sweet and luscious. Its deep purple colour was striking, adding a touch of elegance to our table.
The main course did not disappoint. The stir-fried shredded chicken with preserved chilli sauce was a symphony of flavours, perfectly balanced with just the right amount of heat and spice. Each bite offered a delightful combination of tender chicken and the bold, complex notes of chilli sauce, creating an exciting dish. Paired with the Yi Jing chicken fried rice, the meal reached new heights. The fried rice was a masterclass in taste and texture. It complemented the spicy chicken wonderfully, providing a harmonious balance that made each mouthful irresistible.
Yi Jing’s homemade mango ice cream was a luscious and creamy delight, bursting with the rich sweetness of ripe mangoes. This exquisite dessert provided a perfect and satisfying end to our meal. Despite being so full, we could not resist the sweet invitation extended by Chef Prithvi Raj Singh. The ice cream’s velvety texture and vibrant flavour made each spoonful a moment of pure indulgence, leaving us thoroughly content and impressed by the culinary craftsmanship on display.
Our dining experience was elevated not only by the ambience and exquisite cuisine but also by the remarkable team behind the scenes. The chef team including Chef Prithvi Raj Singh, Chef Xu Tao, and Chef Anurudh Khanna, worked magic in the kitchen. Each dish showcased a perfect blend of traditional Chinese flavours and innovative techniques, offering a true feast for the senses. Also, the exceptional service, warm welcome, hospitality, and accommodation provided by the staff led by the managers, Mr. Gihan Jayamaha and Mr. Mahil made us feel instantly at home. Their attentiveness and expertise guided us through the menu, ensuring we experienced the best at Yi Jing.
Aside from the delectable food, attentive staff, and inviting ambience, several other noteworthy aspects of Yi Jing deserve appreciation: Yi Jing’s menu is thoughtfully curated to cater to a diverse range of preferences and dietary needs.
