This cold weather is both amazing and frustrating at the same time. Either way, we made a list of places for you to visit this weekend, that is cozy and ideal for this rainy weather.
If you're looking to enjoy some good food along with great beer, Bavarian is your place. While they're popular for their meat and seafood platters, you can opt for individual dishes as well, which would cost you nearly as much. You can try the Bavarian Steak Stack (Rs. 2280) made with local beef. It comes with a side of mashed potato which is incredibly creamy and delicious. They've also got some of the best pork dishes that we've tried in Colombo. In term of drinks, you can try the Original Martini (Rs. 600) where the taste of gin is very refreshing. The interior represents a classic German pub vibe and it has a very vintage theme to it. They have booths which are especially cozy to sit and enjoy a meal.
Baguette has some great French bready stuff for you to enjoy with a warm cup of tea or coffee. The Vegetable Quiche (Rs. 300) for instance was one of my favorites there. It's delicious, fluffy and filling. They've also got The Turkey Tartine (Rs. 400) which is another great option. Their coffee is not bad either. The place while quite small is very cozy and lovely. It's a great place to hang out or even to grab a quick bite.
Over the past year, the restaurant scene in the suburbs of Dehiwala - Mount Lavinia area has been on a steady climb with a bunch of new spots opening up. Double Cheese, in particular, is one that has a great atmosphere, especially if you want to enjoy some warm, delicious food with lots of cheese. The Creamy Penne Pasta with Chicken (Rs. 400) is one example. It is a creamy, delicious treat with a side of toasted bread. You can also try the Dark Chocolate Latte (Rs. 400) which is very chocolatey and has a rich coffee flavor that comes through the fluffy foamy milk.
We've been here quite a few times and never had a bad experience. They've got some good coffee, and their Hot Chocolate (Rs. 550) is hands down the best we have had. It is amazing! That decadent chocolate taste with a thick consistency is apparent from the first sip. Imagine how good this would be on days like this? We highly recommend it. They've also got some great Ham and Cheese Macaroni (Rs. 600) if you're going for a meal. The place is broken up into two main rooms. You're not all up in a big area and, at least when it's not busy, it feels relatively private. But not private enough to make out. We get a lot of questions about that, and this isn't a great place for it. For chatting, yes, it's good.
If you're looking for some good old fusion Asian cuisine, there's no better place. The Singapore Chilli Crab (Rs. 1650) is a massive, fiery concoction of crispy sweet-chili batter, succulent medium shell crab, and chunks of flavor-soaked fresh crab meat, this is one of our favorite crab preparations in the city. The place is quite alright for a small crowd to hang out. On the day we visited, the air conditioner didn't work so we were sweating buckets, but I don't think that'd be a problem these days.
If you consider yourself a coffee lover and have it on a daily basis, do yourself a favor and try Kopi Kade. Undoubtedly, the best coffee in town. There are a variety of beans to sniff and choose from, including single origin. You can order a Plain Espresso (Rs. 450) or even a Mocha (Rs. 650) if you don't like the strong coffee taste. We have tried both and they are excellent. They also have Sliders (Rs. 150-350) to go with the coffee. The ambiance is open and very modern - all wood and steel. The furniture all looks custom made and it's simple and stylish.
A chic twist on the old Scottish pub aesthetic. It’s a great spot to drop in for some steak and beer. The BBQ Ribs (Rs. 1,600) is filling, delicious and meaty, with a nice sweet BBQ sauce. You can also try the Aberdeen Steak Pie (Rs. 895) which has just the right amount of beef, however, the spice palate was nearly nonexistent but you don't really mind it because the beef does it. For drinks, you can go for a Strawberry Mojitos (Rs.750 for one) which is nice and chilled, and the strawberry flavor is legit and not some dubious syrup from a bottle. If not, you can go for a good old Pitcher (Rs. 1500). The place is a big, handsome space, built on the old, solid bones of a venerable building with a Scottish theme.
So there you go. If you ever find yourself getting out of bed this weekend, try one of these places. Be safe out there.
