These are few of the places where you could hold your birthday or party if it’s for 15-20 people. We have another list of Function Halls and Party Places for large groups of people, but as many of us like to celebrate occasions with our closest friends and/or family, we’ve compiled a list of venues that are great and accommodating for smaller groups, with friendly and supportive staff. Bear in mind, we have not included places like Pizza Hut, McDonald’s or KFC as they are more ideal for kids parties.
As it is bit on the pricier side Toby’s is an ideal place to hold your birthday party for a small group of friends. They’ve got quite a few private rooms which are spacious and comfortable, with or without a TV, depending on your choice. They have an a la carte menu and the total bill should be minimum 5000/- if you’re requesting a private room.
Cioconat is another great place to hold a birthday party. The staff is friendly and very cooperative, you can get everything done over the phone without having to go there. They have private rooms which they offer for groups with minimum of 15 people. You could either choose a buffet which is 1200/- per person including a welcome drink and you get to choose from a range of dishes, including biriyani. They are also willing to arrange high tea if that’s what you like which would be 1450/- per person. Also, if it’s a la carte, the total bill has to be more than 9000/-.
The Station has some of the best food in town. Situated by the beach, it is the perfect place for a birthday party. Imagine an evening where you get to sit around a table with your feet in the sand, singing along to your favorite songs, eating some good food – could it get better than this? Their buffet range from 1450/- to 1850/-, the only downside is that you cannot choose your own dishes and the menus they have do not have a lot of vegetarian options.
The Commons is one of my personal favourites as it offers a wide range of Sri Lankan and Western cuisine with large portions. They don’t have a separate menu for special events nor a buffet but their a la carte menu is extensive so I don’t think the lack of a party menu is going to be a problem. Minimum per person would have to be 1000/- which is pretty cheap compared to other places. They also have a private room and you can use it even if it’s 3 to 5 people, there’s no minimum amount.
Cheers Pub at Cinnamon Grand, although might sound like an unusual place to host a birthday party, it is quite a cozy and private place. They only offer an a la carte menu with minimum of 2000/- per person. Decorations are not permitted and if you’re bringing a cake, you have to buy it from the Coffee Stop at Cinnamon Grand, which isn’t exactly a bad thing cause their cakes are fairly tasty. If these conditions are a let down for you it could be more of a dinner party rather than an all-out birthday party.
The Barnesbury is a great venue to host a party for a small group of people especially since they’ve got a really big and spacious seating area outside. They only offer a la carte and the only requirement is that each person should order a drink and a main dish. Their menu ranges from Asian to Western cuisines and the food is delicious. Out of all the places in the list, this may be the most flexible venue.
They do have a separate hall, but for a small group of people they only offer the rooftop or a long table. The rooftop which is a great place to hold a small birthday party. They find it difficult to prepare a buffet for a small group therefore from the a la carte menu it is on average 2500/- per person.
When you think of English Cake Company, the first thing that comes to your mind is: high tea! So why not? They host birthday parties and they have a balcony with tents which is a great place to hang out if it’s in the evening. Their upstairs is also available for special events. It has a very homey vibe and the staff is young and friendly so you could have a great time there. Their high tea is only 1250/- per person, and is more than generous.
Yet another great place to host a birthday. Especially outside or on the deck. The best time would be in the evening or at night, when that cool breeze hits you; there’s nothing like that feeling. The staff is friendly and accommodating. Although they might not offer a buffet for a small group, you can order off their menu, and if you stick to just their pizzas you could get enough for 8000/- if not, it will be quite pricey.
This is one of the most famous places to hold parties. They go all out, with the happy birthday song, the decorations, everything. They do not offer a buffet but their a la carte menu is one of the best I’ve seen with a variety of meat and veggies, minimum of 2500/- per person. They also have private rooms to hold small gatherings so you’d have your privacy. Although a bit expensive, it is definitely a great place to hold your birthday. It’s only once a year, so go crazy!
Upali’s is best for Lankan lovin’ party people. The menu is all Sri Lankan and mouthwatering. The seating is available for maximum 30 people so for a small group this place is ideal. The total bill should be a minimum of 15,000/-.
Hosting a party at Hilton is always gonna be expensive, but its famous for its ambience so FLOW is not any different. They have a range of cuisines so don’t worry about your friends not having the same taste palate as you. They have Sri Lanka, Indian, Japanese and Chinese, and for a group the maximum amount is 30 people, with 2600/- per person for lunch and 2900/- per person for dinner.
Bayleaf also hosts parties for maximum amount of 20 people. They only have two rooms so it’s best to call and make the reservations ASAP. The total bill must be a minimum of 20,000/-. It's a converted old colonial house, so the ambience is classy.
You might wanna loosen your purse strings if you’re gonna host a party at The Gallery Café. They allow groups of maximum 30 people so for a small group the place is ideal, however you have to deposit 25,000/- earlier so it might not be the best idea to choose this place if you’re on the fence. The food is really good ranging from Asian, Western and Italian cuisines. The only downside is the down payment and the mercurial service.
Nihonbashi is one of the classiest Japanese spots on the island. They have 8 private rooms with a maximum amount of 20 people, but even as fewer as two people are allowed.
If you want your party to have good food and cheap booze, this is your place. Mintage offers a balance of great Sri Lankanized Chinese food which no one says no to and of course, cheap beer. They allow small groups of 10-15 people when it comes to events. Total bill should be minimum of 20,000/-.
Needless to say, Café Francais is the best place for your French food cravings. You’d be very famous among your friends if you hold your birthday there, just saying, but the maximum amount of people for a party is 10 so choose them wisely. They do have private rooms but the room alone costs 5000/-, and they only have an a la carte menu, so it could be expensive for just 10 people.
This may be the most expensive place to host a party. With a maximum amount of 6-12 people, the total bill should be 40,000/- to 60,000/-. The food is, of course, great if you can afford it.
So there you have it. The list is long so I'm sure you'd be able to find something to your liking. Comment below if you know any other places we've missed.
They do chicken biryani pretty darn good and now have crab and lamb on the menu.
Countries that let you in without a fuss with your Lankan passport
Belmio is a pizzeria in Thalawatugoda that serves up easily the best pizza in the area. They also deliver fast.
