Achcharu Kade closed down their outlet, but they're still at Good Market and do lunch and dinner deliveries.
Achcharu Kadé from the Good Market
at Racecourse now has their own little eatery in Kollupitiya. It's very colourful, the achcharu is great as usual, and we loved their rice and curry and home-made ice cream.
Before we get to the food, we have to talk about the place itself, because it's really quite charming. It's a small A/Ced space (sweet relief from the sun), with soothing white furniture combined with bright colours in everything from the decor to the cutlery.
There's a row of cushy seats by the windows, and enough little white stools for about eight. We loved the trippy paintings on the walls.
We asked for two achcharus - one was a combo of fruit and ambarella, and the other a classic mango achcharu. Both were tasty as what we're used to from Good Market - a good portion for just Rs. 200 and on the achcharu spectrum fell in the sweeter end than the dynamite end.
I'm a big fan of Achcharu Kadé's rice and curry now (Rs. 375). I wasn't expecting much but this was actually very well put together, and reminded me of the skilled home-maker's care put into The Travelling Food Tuk's
dishes. The chicken was well cooked and seasoned, the potatoes were shallow fried, and I loved the combo of the rice with the pol (ish) sambol and the side of pineapple. We were told that the recipe was the owner Natalie's own. There's plenty of other interesting stuff on the menu too (biriyani, spaghetti, sandwiches, smoothies), so check our gallery for the menu.
If you love and miss bombai-muttai like I do (because that bombai-muttai man
doesn't visit my house anymore), you are going to go ga-ga over this special bombai-muttai ice cream dish. We got this and also a wonderfully flavoured coffee-and-almond ice cream, both home-made. These were for Rs. 240 each and were fully worth it, while ordinary home-made vanilla ice cream (for you boring types) only costs Rs. 200.
We don't know other central-Colombo restaurants that specialize in achcharu, so we're incredibly happy that we have one now. The rice and curry here is definitely worth going for, the desserts are delightful, the prices are reasonable (Rs. 200 - 500) and the theme is quirky and colourful. Here's hoping they keep it that way.
They also do delivery. Also you can get them to bring the food to your car after 6:00 PM. Better call before you make the trip since they just started up here so opening times can vary.
