Shopping for fruit and veg in Colombo is rarely a pleasure. You're either fumbling through unopenable plastic bags at Keells or side-stepping dried puddles of crow poo at the market. The thing about vegetable shopping here is that you'll never find everything you want within a single venue. And as for enjoying the experience, well, that's unlikely.
We were excited to learn that Anything.lk offered online vegetable delivery
. It sounded quite excellent - you could buy all your fruit and veg without having to leave your house and the selection actually seemed broader than most local supermarkets. And
they promised to deliver within two days. Seemed promising - but then this is Colombo, and even ordering something as simple as pizza could go colossally wrong. So with many cold pizzas in mind, I adjusted my expectations and proceeded with caution.
Pleasantly enough, the ordering is very straightforward and simple. You log in using your Facebook account (or you can register) and select what you want from a broad range of items: avocado (Rs. 39 each), strawberries (Rs. 1,172/kg), pakchoy (Rs. 92/kg), fresh parsley (Rs. 600/kg), tarragon (Rs. 660/kg) and a fair bit more. You can check out the whole list here
The selection of fresh herbs alone is worth logging in for (for those unfamiliar to the city's barren landscape of supermarkets, fresh herbs are something of a rarity). The fruit side is a bit limited, but the veg is comprehensive. You then select your payment options (you can pay online using credit card, Dialog EZ Cash, or go for cash on delivery), type in your address and boom. Veggies on the way.
They don't seem to do same or next day delivery, so you have to wait two days. I was still anticipating some kind of misadventure, but on the expected day of arrival our bell rang promptly at 7.30 AM and there was a driver at the door clutching a bulging bag of groceries. The best part was that he didn't call eight times for directions.
They almost got it right. All items arrived safely and without incident, save for a portion of absent tarragon, rosemary and baby carrots - not quite sure what happened to these. Still, everything was fresh and good. Excellent quality, almost excellent service. And you only pay Rs. 150 for delivery - a small amount considering the amount of hassle and time saved. It's well worth a try.
The vegetables are all fresh. Just order at least 48 hours in advance.
