Arthur's Pizza

220, Galle Road, Mount Lavinia

Arthur's pizza is now a pub, too. They do their own take on localised pizza.

Another day another pizza. Arthur's Pizza is a modest new pizzeria in Mt.Lavinia next to the Lion Pub. They're not the most authentic but the food is still comforting.

Pizzas

One thing we felt was that their pizzas taste a lot like the ones we would make at home. It's an old school pizza oven, not wood fired like the new places. Their menu is quite limited compared to others with only around 12 options, priced between Rs. 950 - Rs. 1250 for 11'' pizzas.

The chicken nai miris pizza (Rs. 950) was the spiciest pizza they've got on the menu. We were expecting it to be pretty spicy, since it's supposed to be nai miris, but it turned out only to be mildly so. The chicken still tasted good, but the problem was that the cheese was not of a very high quality. We're almost sure it's one of the local brands, which doesn't really come close to quality mozzarella.

The meat lovers (Rs. 1150) comes with chicken, beef sausage and chicken sausage. We weren't expecting much when we saw the word "beef sausage" in the description, but it actually turned out to be pretty tasty. Don't expect this to be like pepperoni though. It was the same cheese they had used in the earlier pizza but because of the different meats in this one, we didn't really notice it as much.

Service and Ambience

Arthur's Pizza is right next to the Lion Pub in Mt.Lavinia, under the same management apparently. They've got a very simple set up with wooden furniture and a crimson theme which is easy on the eyes. It's actually a pretty nice place to sit and eat.

Service is mostly handled by one friendly and attentive waiter who speaks very fluent Singlish. Arthur's is still very new so we were the only patrons at the time, but the pizzas came to the table in less than 15 minutes, which is pretty fast.

Conclusion

Arthur's Pizza may not be the most authentic, but we're still glad to see new pizzerias coming up out side of Colombo. Hopefully with time we'll see a greater selection of pizzas and some higher quality ingredients, which would really help the cause.

TIP

Bliss out on that chocolate biscuit pudding.

Their main offering is pizzas, but they are terrible.
For a start the pizza crust is all wrong. It appears to be just flour and water similar to the flour mix used to seal the lid of Biriyani pots.

The cheese is like plastic, there is hardly any tomato paste and instead of olive oil they seem to be using some ordinary oil. The pizzas taste quite bad. The Sri Lankan hot chilli pizza is edible as the chillies drown out everything else, but the Italian pizzas are disasters.

They use chopped pieces of spam luncheon meat instead of Ham and Pepperoni. They either don't know the difference or they are knowingly passing it off as their clientele doesn't know the difference .

However the prices at Arthur's are very high - around SLR 2,000/- for a 12" pizza. Even the prices at the high end pizza restaurants in Colombo where they use top quality ingredients are not this high.

The pizzas have definitely taken a nosedive. Not even close to their former quality. Avoid.

Old review:
Pretty cool place. I feel like their pizzas have gotten a bit better too. The new additions like the mas kade and the curry pork pizza are also pretty great. Chicken nai miris was insanely spicy this time around the vegetarian options were really good as well. Service is inconsistent though.
