Baker Street is a Tasty Caterers style bakery housed in a beautiful old bungalow in North Colombo serving the great triumvirate of short eats, cakes and rice.
Imagine if Barefoot
or Paradise Road
was a bath kade
. That is, imagine if their dimpled miris gal
floors paved the way to malu paans
and butter cake instead of vibrant textiles and fashionably peeling furniture. That's what Baker Street is like - a boutique kade - although there's no relation in decor or design to Sherlock's Marylebone home. The seemingly random bakery is housed in a truly beautiful old bungalow, framed by overhanging wooden filigree and set with fading blue doors.
The old house turned almost kade
serves a selection of buns, patties, and slightly dry looking cakes. The rice and curry is good, the maluu paan's slightly heavy on the maluu and the iced coffee is suitably sweet and milky - but none of the food is quite up to the elegance of the surroundings. It's strange that this Perera & Sons shadow resides in such a beautiful old building, but then these are the early signs of a gentrifying North. If you're in the area, it's worth a visit - we liked the rice and curry.
The rice and curry is good.
