Barracuda

41/2 Wasala Road, Dehiwala

We had a great time here. It's a friendly spot on the beach, very near Colombo, with good Chinese food. Doesn't get much better.

Barracuda is a new beach eatery in Dehiwala. They have beautiful seating under a mangrove canopy and on the beach and some solid Chinese food. As long as there isn't a party going on, it's a great place to hang.

Despite being a seaside town, Colombo doesn't have many beach restaurants. In Colombo proper there's only Beach Wadiya, in Wellawatte. In Dehiwala there's The Station and in Mount there's Casadi and Buba.

Barracuda is a new addition to those ranks and it's a good one. They have a great location (next to the Station, down from the William Grinding Mills junction) and quite good Chinese food. Great place for a sunset beer and bites.

The Food

Salt and pepper cuttlefish Salt and pepper cuttlefish

We visited Barracuda around sunset. We ordered some beers (somewhat off menu) and a slow progression of courses. The Barracuda menu is basically Chinese. We've heard that they've recruited chefs from some prominent Chinese restaurants and the results are good. It's flavorful beach food without being too salty or oily. We wouldn't call it healthy mind you, but it makes for pleasant eating.

We started with the salt and pepper cuttlefish (Rs. 580 for small, which is enough for four people to nibble). This was perfectly cooked (not to tough, not too raw) and joyfully seasoned with onion and chilis. Well presented, very tasty, fresh.

Cauliflower

We also tried the cauliflower in butter sauce (Rs. 498). This was my choice, much controversy (no meat?) but I think it was really good. Buttery yes, but the cauliflower was done with a good snappity crunch and punctuated with mushrooms and carrots. Gives hope for their vegetarian options.

Finally, we tried a chicken fried rice (Rs. 498) which was quite nice even on its own.

The food is basically straight Chinese and they do a good job of it. It's colorful, spicy and goes very well with beers on the beach.

Location

View from the beach

Barracuda has a prime (and clean) spot next to the beach in Dehiwala. Marine Drive actually extends out here now, just keep going pass Wellawatte and cross the bridge over the canal.

You can dine/drink on the beach, or inside under a canopy of trees. There are mangroves and even though it was raining, we were able to stay dry under the dense cover. They also have indoor seating.

Service

The lady running front of house was super nice, helpful and hilarious. We asked her for a recommendation and she said lobster (the most expensive thing on the menu). We asked again and she still said lobster. She was really sweet, joking with us but always keeping the beer and food coming as well. Everyone we interacted with there was very nice.

We had a great time here. It's a friendly spot on the beach, very near Colombo, with good Chinese food. Doesn't get much better.

TIP

They only serve beer and wine, but you can BYOB. No corkage, yay! Note that they host EDM dance parties somedays, so perhaps call ahead on weekends.

Beware they now charge a corkage of 1500 for hard liquor or the food & beverage should exceed 1500 per head. So there were 4 of us and the good bill should exceed 6000 rs.
The quality of service dropped significantly the level of service of one of pettahs dodgy bars is much better.
Recommend to avoid barracuda at all cost!

Well….where do I start !!! We had a reservation for 7 people on the beach, unfortunately the weather gods were not on our side last Saturday (25th of Feb) we were asked to move into a glass cubicle as all the other tables were reserved ????as informed by the staff even though we noticed plenty of empty tables in covered areas of the restaurant.
Got the feeling that we were on display inside the cubicle…and feeling claustrophobic.
After the rain had ceased, we ventured to the beach, to our "reserved table", but we were informed that they will not wipe the plastic tables/chairs as it's getting late(9.30 PM) and will not serve anything as well.
However, after much pleading/begging we were given a table in the garden under a tree. Wow….much to our relief.
We ordered dinner….and we made the mistake of ordering Crispy Beef slices with chilli among many other things.
The Beef was so chewy, it reminded me of an old worn out, discarded leather shoe. None of us could eat it and when this was pointed out to the waiter, he replied, Quote " That's the way this particular dish is prepared"Unquote.
We were left speechless, and we also realized that it's futile to pursue this issue with him any further and the best option is to pay and leave & "NEVER TO COME BACK". Also make the public aware of the standard of service and food through a review.
The rest of the food was edible……
The only positive remark I can make about our horrendous experience was that we were allowed to take in our alcohol without a corkage charge.
06 of us were from the hospitality industry and we had never come across such incompetent service standards and appalling food.

Nice atmosphere and food. However when I called to make a reservation for a repeat visit, they were not very helpful and said they do not take reservations. for a party of 12 people I wasn't going to risk going there for dinner and finding out they don't have space. So instead, made a reservation at the next door restaurant where we had a great time.

Very expensive. Go if you are rich and if you want to waste money.
