BreadTalk (Mount Lavinia).

BreadTalk is an internationally renowned bakery chain which has been in Sri Lanka for a while now. They are known to have an upscale vibe and price. On the way back home after work, their Mount Lavinia branch became an obvious choice to grab some delicious carbs.

Food & Drinks

Here, you’ll find yourself lost in a sea of bread and pastries which you can opt for, with a few drinks.

One doesn't just walk into a BreadTalk and not get the Chicken Floss (Rs. 250) so that's exactly what we did. This is the signature creation that placed them on the map. The floss gives off a pleasant aroma and melts in your mouth while boasting a lot of meaty flavours. The floss is the star, but the bun itself isn’t something to rave about. As you sink your teeth into it, you’ll be greeted with a savoury and creamy filling. They could have easily improved its flavour and texture by adding more of that. Other than that, we get why it’s their best-selling bread worldwide.

We were pleased to find the Spring In The City (Rs.190) too. It’s a fluffy roll of soft bread with BreadTalk’s signature floss on the sides. This bread has an interesting look and a very unique taste. The cheese, spring onions and chicken bacon – all added to its deliciousness.  Every element went along well with each other and created a nice, balanced flavour. We regret not getting two of this.

Chicken Parmesan (Rs.190) came with a filling of chicken sausages, chicken and parmesan cheese. It is so thick, that it sticks to your mouth. All this goodness was enveloped in a soft dough. We enjoyed the flavour of this and we ended up wishing that they were a bit more generous with the filling.

Rainbow Fantasy Donut (Rs.160) was a bit of let down with its crusty, very sweet chocolate layer. The colourful sprinkles helped alleviate any ill-will towards it as we gobbled down the doughnut.

The Iced Milo (Rs. 280) was a treat – not too sweet and rich with milo flavour. It was chilled enough to make you feel refreshed and not having a ton of ice cubes diluting the drink made us happy. Still, for the price, it’s a tough recommend.

Service & Ambience

The staff is pretty chill and helpful should you have any questions or inquiries, but aside from that, it's self-service. You’ll be more or less left to your own devices, which we appreciated.

While the place is not the most spacious out of the BreadTalks we've been to, it did have space to hold about 20 people comfortably. But most of the time people seem to use the takeaway option.

Conclusion

The delicious offerings of BreadTalk are something to come back for. But it’s not like we lack good bakers here in Sri Lanka that can offer a BreadTalk a good run for their money. They always did a decent job standing toe to toe with the local bakeries while retaining their international flair and as far as we can tell, they are keeping at it.
