Cafe Japan

25, Borella Cross Road, Colombo 8

Cafe Japan has been around since 2000, and serves up some good Japanese fare.

Cafe Japan has been around for ages - since around 2000, I think. It used to be located on Ward Place and then Duplication Road, but now it's in a house off Marine Drive. You can dine in (best if you make a reservation) but it seems to function primarily as a delivery/take away service.

It probably stands without much argument that Sri Lanka's best Japanese restaurant is Nihonbashi. But excellent as it may be, Nihonbashi isn't really accessible to everyone (expensive, fancy venues). Cafe Japan, on the other hand, serves high quality food that pretty much anyone can have. And the prices are quite reasonable. Bentos range from Rs. 750 to 1300, and you can order a really tasty chicken katsu or teriyaki for just Rs. 850. That's not bad - you get a well sized portion as well as miso soup, chilli, etc.

The sushi, also, is pretty excellent. A massive platter containing 52 pieces can be comfortably shared amongst four and costs Rs. 3000. Sounds like a lot, but again that's not too bad; it works out to about Rs. 750 each. This is about what you'd be paying for a standard dish at Flower Drum. And it's good stuff. You get tuna and salmon sashimi, teriyaki chicken roll, avocado roll and more. The only problem is that they don't give you enough of the ginger slices. And the wasabi is pre-added, meaning you could be in for a bit of a shock. But apart from that, excellent.

The ordering system for delivery, however, is a little strange. They have a blog, but the menu isn't on there. Instead you have to email them (cafejapan24@hotmail.com) requesting a copy. They reply quite promptly, but we've included the menu above anyway for your reference.

The food at Cafe Japan is great. The place can be a little difficult to find if you're picking up (they don't deliver to Nugegoda), but they were extremely helpful and sent someone to stand at the end of the lane until we found them. The lady who runs it is also incredibly sweet and helpful. This is a lovely little place with good, authentic Japanese food. Highly recommended.

TIP

It's always safer to call before dropping in. If the phone rings and no one answers, they're probably closed.

Cafe Japan is a great place to drop in to for a casual date. It's got a cosy, homely vibe that you won't find at any other Japanese restaurant.

Cafe Japan is a small home restaurant off Marine Drive in Colpetty that does some pretty great Japanese cuisine. It's the definition of a hidden gem since the place is ridiculously hard to find. They've been around since 2000, but those who know about the place seem to want to keep it to themselves.
