Carmello isn't necessarily 'new' to the ice cream scene in Colombo. They had a shop down Havelock Road, which was closed down a few years ago, but now they've claimed an all new spot in Wellawatte.
It's homemade ice cream, and they haven't limit themselves to the generic chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry flavors - which we appreciate.
Sadly, most of their flavors weren't available on the day we visited, therefore, we decided to go with three flavors - Fig and Honey (Rs. 180), Blueberry (Rs. 180) and Chocolate Nog (Rs. 150).
The ice cream had tiny icicles wedged in, which isn't something people particularly applaud. Strangely, in this case, we enjoyed it. The ice cream itself was quite creamy, and the teeny tiny icicles made the them much more interesting. Weird, we know. I've never really loved Blueberry flavored anything but this wasn't bad at all. With actual blueberry preserve bits embedded into the ice cream, this surpassed my expectations in many ways.
This is the Fig and Honey. Again, like the Blueberry, it was rich with tiny honey coated fig pieces here and there. In terms of flavor, it tasted like vanilla ice cream with a slightly fruity aftertaste. We liked it.
However, no nuts were found in this, but we did manage to retrieve a few tiny pieces of chocolate chips. Tasting very much like cocoa powder but very much less sweet than the commercial chocolate ice cream, this flavor was good.
All in all, Carmello is alright. It's good place to be if you're looking for some ice cream without having to sell a kidney for it.
An Ice Cream place down Marine Drive.
Carmello serves up local and somewhat artificial ice cream and gelato. It's a tiny shop opposite Havelock City.
Go south on Havelock Road past Royal Institute and the canal. Carmello is on your left, opposite the Havelock City apartments. It's on a little by-lane running parallel to Havelock Road.
