Chapters

40/1, Joseph Lane, Colombo 04

Chapters has a decent range of books, mostly fantasy and illustration, but what we really love about this bookshop is it's so much more than a store.

Chapters is a fairly new little book shop located on Staple Street. Actually, it looks little from the outside but it's not so little once you go in. It's fancier than the average Sarasavi or Vijitha Yapa, going for a look and feel more along the lines of the bookshops at Barefoot and ODEL. They've also got big sofas and a coffee stall selling affordable teas and coffees (ranging from about Rs. 150 to 250).

It's a funny sort of place really. It's nice, but I don't think the selection is extensive enough to make someone actively decide to visit. There's a random scattering of reads from here and there (a handful of the classics, The Adrian Mole Diaries, some Eco, Jamie Oliver's 30 Minute Meals, etc) but overall the collection's pretty sparse - you're unlikely to find something you're specifically looking for. This is more of a browse and chance upon sort of shop.

The children's section, however, is quite good. They've got a feel for the sort of books kids enjoy reading, like Jaqueline Wilson, Mick Inkpen's lovely Kipper the dog series, Roald Dahl and also the hugely popular Wimpy Kid - if you have a child who needs encouragement to read, this series is a great way to start them off. They're funny and have lots of cartoony pictures.

Chapter's is a sweet place, and the staff are very friendly and helpful - would we recommend you go there? Yes, if you're looking for children's books. Not so much if you're looking for adult's.

TIP

Check out the interactive science puzzles and board games at the store.
