Chatz

79, Horton Place, Cinnamon Gardens, Colombo 7

Chatz is a convenient cafe/ resto in Horton Place which you can drop by to grab a meal while having a good chat with a friend.

Chatz has been around a while, and it's been some time since we paid them a visit too. They are a convenient cafe/ resto in Horton Place which you can drop by to grab a meal while having a good chat with a friend.

Food

Their menu leans on Asian fusion but it's not limited to that. You can get soups, burgers, pizzas and fajitas paired with all kinds of meats - beef, lamb, pork, and chicken.

We got the Egg Drop Soup (Rs. 450) to start with. Served warm, it also had a small cube of butter with a few toasted bread pieces on the side. The soup was filled with bits of chicken and egg whites swimming in it. Leeks and spring onions provided a good crunch, while improving the flavour of the broth, which landed on the tad salty side. However, we appreciated the pepper undertone - seemed to give a nice zing to it.

The Nasi Goreng (Rs. 950) took us by surprise with its rather beautiful presentation.

The rice had a nice wok-fried aroma to it but came across as a bit oily. Despite its good looks, the heat from chilli in the rice hit us squarely in the face. While we do appreciate the heat, too much bell pepper and leeks mixed in was a bit annoying. We spotted a lot of chicken in the rice, which we loved.

The pineapple slice and the prawn crackers on the plate vanished as soon as it landed on our table. We do appreciate the jumbo prawn, it was chewy, with a touch from the grill. However, we would have appreciated more if we got two of these.

However, given the price and the portion size, it is essential to see that they could have done much better.

We didn’t expect the Pork Bacon and Egg Panini to end up as the star of our meal, but it did. The panini itself was essentially a couple of toasted bread slices, but the filling is what made everything so interesting. Plentiful with bacon bits, there was a bit of sweetness seeping through - probably because of a sauce/s they had used in the filling. It was well balanced with the fried egg, making for an excellent panini.

Drinks

We wanted to score a mocktail, but sadly they were out of them. So we got ourselves a Watermelon Juice (Rs. 390) and a Chocolate Milkshake (Rs. 590).

At a glance, this Watermelon Juice seemed so rich in flavour, but we felt bamboozled. While we got it without sugar, the juice can serve better as a palate cleanser rather than a proper juice. It was completely devoid of the watermelon texture and felt watered down.

The Chocolate Milkshake, however, was a winner. Refreshing and very chocolaty, its sugar levels were in balance. There was a scoop of chocolate ice cream sitting on top of the drink which made the whole thing even more chocolatey.

Ambience and Service

The ambience hasn't changed much over the course of years and we take that as a good thing since they have a good thing going on. There is the AC area for dining in and the outside area for smoking and such.

You don't get much of disturbances in the cafe and you can enjoy your meals while seated. The seats were a bit bulky and can be a bit hard to move around a lot but we didn’t mind.

We simply got excellent service from the moment we walked in. Prompt, attentive and polite with smiles is how we would describe it.

They were missing a few items in the menu and waiter profusely apologized each time we tried to choose one of those to the point we felt bad. All in good spirits.

As we were told they do BYOB and don't charge a corkage fee. You can get your drink on after 5 pm. Also, we heard that they prefer groups of five people or more if you're planning to BYOB, and you're supposed to spend Rs. 5000 or above while you are there.

Conclusion

Chatz offers a reliable experience at an okay price but, their food can be a hit or miss. They can serve as a good place to kick back and enjoy your time with a friend or as a group. We feel like there is room for improvement but we can give this place an accepting nod.

TIP

Try the bread pudding, you can bring your own booze.

Terrible Management and customer service.

Recently visited this place with the colleagues having plans of enjoying a decent buffet with a pre-ordered menu. But at the place, they served a completely different menu by switching the items without prior notice at all. Also even though they promised it to be a buffet, they didn't refill at all, thus many of us hardly had something from the so-called buffet.

After all this, they have very bad customer service and terrible management. The manager doesn't even know how to treat and talk to the customers.

Not a good place and would not recommend any sort of event to be hosted here at all.
I would recommend avoiding this place for any sort of event unless you wanna get it ruined.

Not a great place to chill out, not a friendly service because we have reserved the table for 10 peoples and they have arranged very small round table for us and, it’s in the corner of the shelter. We asked them to move it or rearrange the table, then the manager said nothing to do that and his response is not so good. We decided to go another place quickly.

This is a place to be avoided. The staff don't know what they are doing. There seems to be just one cook or rather a multi tasking waiter trying to cook all the eastern and western items on the wide ranging menu.

The burger was horrible. The spaghetti was virtually uncooked and the sauce was just two spoons of tomato sauce without any flavour. Fajita seems to be their signature dish but even that was a total mess and amateurishly cooked up.

We couldn't eat the food and when it was pointed out to them there was no apology, no offer to serve something else, no offer to waive off the charges or even to give a discount. They billed us for all in full and even had the cheek to ask whether they can pack the uneaten food for us to take away.

There is no pork, no alcohol and they don't allow you to bring in any either. The desserts look old, and appear to have been lying in the glass display case for days .

The interior is garishly decorated narrow space and it is cramped with furniture. There is outdoor seating too but it is by the busy main road and as such very dusty and noisy.

The prices are very high although the food cannot be eaten. The staff are untrained and confused. We had to go down the road to Taco Bell and for only Rs 800/- per head we had an eatable lunch.

Probably not my first choice of restaurant (especially when you consider what else is in the area). I had their Mexican Fajita, which was pretty good, but forgettable.
if you are in the area and looking for lunch, i would recommend Tea Avenue at Barnes Place or ZEN Japanese down Rosmead Place.

"If I was younger I'd hang out here", that's what I told my kids when we walked in. They of course were quite amused that dad (not the hippest person on earth) wanted to "hang out". The ambience at Chatz is excellent. This is the key to getting a repeat customer and I'd go back there just to sit and sip a cold drink and relax.

The burgers were quite decent although I do agree rather small in size, and the special offers do not have the sides of fries and slaw that the standard menu options do. The Sea Food Burger my son and I tried was quite nice, the chicken burgers that my daughters had did not get and raves from them so I guess it needs working on by the chef :).

The fries were a disaster, bulk fries bought cheap and fried in reused oil, my advice - if you can't do decent fries take them off the menu.

The desserts were quite good and the cheese cake and the royal looked inviting, as I do not eat much sweets (well not in front of the kids at least) my kids selected the biscuit pudding and the truffle. The biscuit pudding was voted - "best ever" but the truffle had too much "coconut" real or dessicated I do not know.

The manager and staff were quite friendly but I think should be a little less audible in greeting the guests upon arrival and departing.

Chatz is a nice place with a great feel to it. If handled properly it may very well turn out to be one of the best places to go to in Colombo.
