Chesa Swiss

Sadness, this place is closed

Sadness. This old restaurant is now closed.

Chesa Swiss is a fine dining restaurant down old Duplication Road - the service is top class, the food is well done, but their desserts were what really blew us away.

Ambience & Service

The restaurant is obviously quite fancy, and it's inside what seems to have once been a house. Besides the cosy inner dining area, where there's wooden paneling and old paintings, they've also got a lovely courtyard section if you want to dine out on a cool evening. The service is excellent, the waiters here have all the panache of Batman's butler.

Our previous review talked a lot about Chesa Swiss's steaks - they're pretty well known for good steak. This time though we ordered their seafood platter with a side of noodles (Rs. 2400) and lamb chops with a side of baked potatoes (Rs. 3500). The seafood platter was very well done - it included prawn, scallop, mussel and seer; our favourites were the juicy prawns and the scallops. The lamb chop was tender and tasty and was complemented by soft strips of potato and tangy dip. The portions were, however, small (btw, we've taken our food pics this time next to a fork, after one of our readers requested a scale to help gauge the size of servings).

We also got a prawn cocktail (Rs. 900) as a starter, which was awesome, but then you have to be really bad to get a prawn cocktail wrong. We also got a pineapple sorbet each, compliments of the chef, which was such a pleasant surprise: it was cooling and sweet and just about perfect. The bread, made fresh by Chesa Swiss themselves, served with butter inside a happy ceramic cow, was very soft and well done, worth mentioning since we don't usually care for starter-bread.

To be honest, we were expecting good food from this clearly high-end Swiss style restaurant, so it just met our expectations and‚ it didn't go beyond that. We weren't particularly impressed - that is, until the chocolate souffle happened. Goddamn. For Rs. 600 each, we ordered the chocolate souffle with chocolate ice cream and a Coupe Romanoff with fresh strawberries and vanilla ice cream. The Romanoff is a very tall glass topped with the creamiest vanilla we've had anywhere, and from top to bottom it's loaded with slices of fresh delicious strawberry - totally worth the price and the visit. Chesa Swiss makes their own ice cream, so theirs tastes far from average - it's softer and creamier. The chocolate souffle is warm - you break into the fluffy warm top into hot creamy chocolate cake - this with the cool chocolate ice cream is nothing short of epic. They're surprisingly much more generous with dessert portions than the mains. We give this shizzle a solid 9.5/10.

Chesa Swiss is an expensive fine dining restaurant where you can be sure your food's going to be well taken care of. The damage to your bill can be daunting though - almost Rs. 10,000 for two of us. But even for those who aren't keen on a pricey dinner, this place is still completely worth the visit just for their super desserts.

Good place for special occasions.
