We've tried China Doll a few times since our original review and we've revised our opinion a bit. We think China Doll's a pretty good bet for a different take on Chinese.
China Doll is one of the youngest and most creative Chinese restaurant out there. They also have the best website and pretty good delivery.
Our first experience with China Doll delivery was that the food was a bit sweet and lacking punch (perhaps because they don't add the usual MSG). After a second and third time we have to say that, while it's a bit different than the usual Chinese, it's pretty good, you just have to know what you expect.
While we find popular dishes like the Mee Goreng (Rs. 449, small) a bit bland, they are popular and that's probably the way most people like them. If you browse around the menu a bit more, there's some gems. The Spicy Doll Pad Thai (Rs. 449) is pretty good, which we tried last go round. The steamed buns (Rs. 559 for pork) are also tasty, as are the Firecracker Prawns (Rs. 639).
The Firecracker Prawns
China Doll is also generous with the chili paste and sides. Bonus.
We're reviewing the joint as a delivery outlet, but they do have a great location on Alfred House. In terms of delivery they cover Colombo 1-11, Kohuwala, Dehiwala, Nugegoda, etc.
The delivery experience was, for us, very good. The call center is competent and said our food would arrive at 7:30 PM, which it did, on the dot. The driver was prompt, didn't need directions and everything arrived in order and on time.
China Doll runs a reliable and good delivery service. It's not your usual Chinese (no MSG for example) but it's creative, tasty and original.
You can order online via their website. Works quite well.
