Cioconat Lounge

107 Barnes Place, Colombo 7

Cioconat offers some tasty, generous fare, but even so it still isn’t exactly where it could be.

I could never quite bring myself to explore Cioconat, the coffee shop lurking behind all the unsightly coffee-and-ash cladding on Barnes Place. With a name like Cioconat (?) and a facade that had all the elegance of a Colombo bank, what good could possibly lay behind those glass doors? But I was wrong. Kind of. Cioconat isn't terrible - the eponymous hot chocolate is actually quite amazing, the food is decent, and the space is surprisingly large and comfortable. They even have shisha.

But what is Cioconat? It's a bit fuzzy definition wise - while they market themselves as an 'Italian restaurant' and do serve the occasionally Italian dish - lasagne, pasta - this isn't quite cuisine a la italia. Cioconat is more a coffee shop serving the standard desserts, caffeine based beverages and food that veers wildly from the Arabic to the Italian. The only thing really Italian about it is the hot chocolate, and this is one of the few things worth going out of your way for, coffee circuit wise. Italian hot chocolate is great - thick, decadent and puddingy, it's basically like downing a shot of warm, liquid chocolate.

The special brand/method used - Cioconat - is where the shop's strange name comes from. The franchise was originally opened in the Middle East, selling their own version of Italian hot chocolate both at the stores and in powdered packets. Available in a plethora of flavours (meringue, white chocolate, panna cotta, etc.), you can buy a glass of the warmed up sugary broth at the store - it's thick and heavy, topped with tiny floating orbs of crisp icing sugar. Delicious - like dessert in a cup, or a deep mug of pure flowing chocolate. However, it's expensive - the standard cup costing a criminal Rs. 520 (seriously who can afford that?).

Cioconat isn't cheap. The food is fine, but it's nothing overly exciting. The reason you should go? That hot chocolate - and possibly the shisha. This is one of Colombo's few venues where you can drag on some strawberry flavoured hookah while sipping a coffee. They've also got a large garden space and a room for private parties - so good for accommodating groups. If you can get past the hideous cladding, this isn't a bad place - it looks far worse on the outside than in. And they have a nice garden.

TIP

Adjoining the shop is a little store selling a bizarre mix of items - American candy, like Nerds and Hersheys, and also dates (?).

Cioconat has steadily descended down the hill of progress and we're disappointed to report that they're at a stagnant standstill at the moment.

I don't recommend this place for ifthar buffet. They don't fill the dishes when they run out and if you are a slow eater you're basically left with hardly anything . (specially after starving the whole day, I don't think you can't eat a lot at once during ifthar) so no! I don't think this place does any justice to ifthar buffets

They do not have the quality of service at the time they started. simple i do not recommend this place to anyone.
